I have a Birdy.....

Post by Icebound »

...

... on the 1997 SSE, there is a birdy at idle.

It takes a few minutes after start-up to warm up, but gets quite notable in the cabin after a few minutes... have to turn the radio well up :)

Apparent suspects are the usual belt-driven accessories on the right side.

My local mechanic was adamant that it was the idler wheel. But replacing it solved nothing.

The Birdy goes away under any engine torque. Even in neutral, it will go away when engine is revved up above idle.

But at idle, or coasting up to a light, etc... it returns.

Nothing seems to be destroying itself, as it has been a year or two.... it probably is not getting any worse, just more annoying as I get older.

Was hoping that perhaps somebody has had something similar....

Try some belt conditioner, or a new belt. That's always the first step. Also could be the PCV leaking? Check the o-ring on the PCV valve

hit the ribbed side of the belt with some wd-40. dont soak it , just a quick squirt or 2. this will test the belt.

Hi guys,

So does that mean that if WD40 makes the noise go away it is time for the belt to be replaced?

thanks,

Larry

Yes, if a little squirt of WD40 makes the noise stop for a little while, that belt is the culprit. The belt may look fine (not cracked or frayed) but may make noise anyway.

As unrelated as the PCV suggestion sounds, if its leaking it sounds EXACTLY like a worn out pulley. Just so you know.

Get a mechanics stethescope (one of the best tools ever invented!!!!) and take a listen to all your pulleys for grinding or sounds of bearing failure.
