Re: What's the heaviest load you've carried in the trunk?
I did an FE2 conversion on my car (complete) about 40,000 miles ago and have the valve in the trunk to air the rear up...you'd be surprised how long it holds the pressure you give it for, it's really not all that bad. If I know I'm going on a road trip with a little extra in the rear I give it a few more lbs. I'd just be careful of the pump you use to make sure the air going in is dry. I can't say I've gotten anywhere near what you got in the trunk Bill, but, I have had it packed out with luggage using every single cubic inch of space

You should see the WCBF trunks. One of our Canuck moderators broke his trunk latch two years in a row. He's currently running the SLEeper's original in his 97. The replacement came from Utah.
But that doesn't come close to rrounds. Rod and Cindy pack that car so full there's hardly room for that little stuffed remote control toy they call a dog (Bo's chew toy).
Back on topic, in hindsight, my trailer would have been the best option, but with the weather, I had to shoot for 'gaps' in the radar (Home Depot is a mile away). I was able to do it in two trips between rainstorms, and not have to unload all 170 bricks at once. I also avoided pulling my trailer out of a friend's wet yard. Granted, winter isn't the best time of year to be doing brick and mortar work to begin with.
Both loads combined were 1100 lbs. Funny thing is that this second back of mortar will probably fall JUST short of completing the fireplace. Now I'll have to figure out what to do with the leftovers.

Progress here:

It's coming along nicely, and the pile of bricks is majorly depleted.
