I don't think plasti-dip will give a good enough representation of what they would look like though. If I do black I want them to match the paint in glossiness, they will be wetsanded and polished to perfection....

I think I will just do it

I'm kind of feeling gunmetal more than black. Gotta have at least a bit of contrast! Will plastidip be better at filling in the imperfections?

Along with painting, they will get the imperfections sanded and filled in.

Heather REALLY loves the way SAMzGXP's car looked viewtopic.php?f=9&t=28435&hilit=gxp so probably paint with a red stripe around the outer edge of the wheel. Nothing is 100% yet, just thinking about what to do with the trashed wheels....

Anyone car to try a photoshop?

Not quite. It covered up most of the flaked chrome on my wheels but there's a particular spot on the edge of one rim that was damaged probably from a wheel weight. The chrome is cracked off leaving a pretty large gap that is still noticeable even under the plastidip. You gotta get close, but it's there and you'll notice it. Plastidip definitely isn't an alternative to paint if you want show car quality. And it will never be glossy like paint. But it's cool if you wanna see how painting them might look. If you got the means to paint your rims, I'd plan to do that eventually.

Nice ride Ryan.

You could have them chromed with black chrome. That would be plenty of gloss!

You could use black PlastiDip with the Glossifier. You can get a look at what that looks like here http://www.dipyourcar.com/shop/page/7?shop_param= (about 1/2 way down) there is a video on that site of him doing the gloss on the wheels. It looks pretty good, it's easy, and it's cheap!

Doing some work on it today.

Started with Menzerna Super Intensive Polish and that wasn't getting me what I wanted. Then I went to Menzerna PowerGloss Compound followed by the Menz SIP, still not happy. From there I went to wetsanding with 2000 grit paper followed by Menz PGC, then Menz SIP, then Menzerna Super Finish.

Before.

After, this is only with SIP

After, this is with PowerGloss followed with SIP

After, again PGC followed with SIP

At this point I just was still not completely satisfied with the results so I went straight to wetsanding, making sure to stay away from the edges and parts that would be extremely difficult to reach with my polisher.

After wetsanding, PGC, and SIP

After wetsand, PGC, SIP and finished with Super Finish

It's not as glossy as you think. Definitely won't looked like it's painted.

I agree that it isn't very glossy but for $20 he could get an approximation to see what it could look like painted without the commitment.

This.

Also, FWIW, if you're going for the look SamzGXP had, powdercoat those wheels. That's the one thing I regret not doing with my wheels. The paint looked awesome for a few months but it's not holding up well.

Amazing work!! I now wish my Bonneville looked like that!

Guess I'm going to have to start saving some money and buying supplies. Hopefully I retained most of the information from when you and Tom helped me back in '09.

I swear, I don't think I've seen mirrors as reflective as that.

Do you have a paint depth meter? Id be nervous wetsanding any factory finish, especially as thin as they lay paint these days. For real nasty stuff though, wetsanding is taking less off than heavy compounding would.

So what's with this obsession with plasti dip? Almost everything I've seen it on looks like crap. Id powdercoat the wheels for sure. I did my street bike wheels ant they've held up well. I practically powdercoated that whole bike though...
