Boost Gauge and Lighting

Post by BonneMe »

Well being a VW owner, I was well overdue for some mods having my car since last July without doing anything to it but the OEM iPod adapter.

Boost gauge is necessary before any real power mods, and threw in an appearance mod at the time.

First things first, gotta have a clean car to work on.

Much better! A few minutes later (literally)

Tinted sidemarkers. They're the only orange on the entire car stock, and only light up with the headlights. These pieces are clear plastic with a black tint, bulbs included. Didn't want to tint orange OEM ones, and have some color present still.

And one for Jim...

Now about that boost gauge, pardon the focus.. Few extra parts as I ordered the complete pod/gauge/fitting kit, they actually double up a few things weirdly.
Image

Mechanical Gauge sold by New South Performance. -30 in/hg to +25 PSI. They work with a gauge builder to produce these for the VW/Audi crowd, uses the exact bulbs the clusters do, font is right in line with most VAG products, and they include a silver trim ring (not pictured) to put on the dial if you choose to. I'm undecided at this point on it...

1/8th NPT fitting on back, and two wires coming out of it.
Image

Most people pull the battery out of car, and fish the vac/pressure line from the engine bay in, I found a few people talking about how that's not all necessary (along with the CEL from battery being out a long time) and fished it from in>out.

Image

And after dealing with some wiring issues getting the lighting to work, here's the finished product. As far as blocking existing gauges, it only covers up about 7250 and onwards on the tach, which is well past redline, and the high beam indicator. I don't really use the Highs at all with the HID's so it's a moot point. Went with this over

That looks really good IMO. It fits in perfectly with all of the stock gauges.

Looks a lot like the older VDO gauges.

Here is something else very useful when you get the mod bug.

If it craps out, or gets inaccurate, I'll be getting a Cobalt in there.

I'll upload a video or two tonight and a few more pix.

VAG COM is down the road yeah, I can think of a few things I'd like to do with it.

Nice. I've driven two VW's that I can remember.

'66 Beetle (uncles).. 3" widened fenders, 7" steel camaro wheels (15's i think), 33 ford teardrop tails.

Other was.. 02 Beetle TURBO S.

I'm thinking about taking a look at those GTI's , but I'd want one in white with those big wheels.. the 18's or 19's, five spokes.. big circular holes in them.. you know what i'm talkin about right? HOT.

High School auto shop instructor has one like yours, too. Nice cars :)

I can vouch for 'zippy' with regards to that car. I rode shotgun in it awhile ago.

Gauge looks like a VERY good fit. Both mechanically and appearance.

Bill, you were pretty "zipped" yourself at that point

After using them as an electrican's apprentice one year for a summer job, I was sold. You can side hammer them right on the joint all day long when a hammer doesn't fit, and at the end of the day, they're still so smooth... I bought those and some cutters that day, I had lost my original set of klein needlenose pliers along the way somewhere.

The boost gauge seems to be in the perfect spot to catch dust lol. It sure gets it alot, but i've had the windows/roof open a bunch too... LOTS of driving this past weekend to Eau Claire to AutoX and back.
