Name that sound

Post by SuperSLE »

Well here is a new one for you. When it heats up it starts to get a high pitched squeel, kind of like a bad pulley, but it is for sure coming from the area of the TC/tranny. Doesn't do it when it is cold. Usually takes about 100 miles or so to do it. And it only happens when it is ideling, when it is under load it doesn't make the sound any more. Then as soon as it coasts down a hill then the noise is back. It is running fine and there are no transmission issues or slip. I also noticed that when you are going up a big hill under load that it kind of stutters a little like it is wanting to shift down but doesn't know if it should or not and then if I push the gas a little more it does shift down and all is fine and dandy. Like I said, under load the noise will go away. It is hard to hear in the video of it, but I give it a little throttle and the squeeling sound goes away, but all you can hear is the air through the intake coming in. At the very end I have shut off the car and the noise continues for another 2-3 seconds afterward, which tells me it isn't a pulley on the other side of the engine, because nothing is moving anymore after being shut off and the noise continues. This was happening before, but has been progressively getting a little worse. Last night it started to happen with less than about 20 or 30 miles.

I can obviously hear it in the video, but I have no idea where you are holding the camera.

Before I listed to the video, I was going to say, it sounds like when my dif retaining pin came out and the diff pin rubbed on the housing. However, after hearing the video, that is clearly not it. Its odd that it makes the sound that long after shutting off the car. Maybe the transmission fluid pump?

Holding microphone right over the bell housing of the tranny and flex plate where the noise is most prominant. Fluid pressures are fine, shifting is fine, no other symptoms, hits all gears. ???I am currently running stock line pressures, maybe I will put in my race tranny options with higher line pressures and see what happens.

And it was happening before your last engine swap?

Well, I don't know for sure. You tend to pay more attention to things after you do some work, so maybe, maybe not. I think I might be leaning toward a vacuum leak from the supercharger to the brake vacuum. The line isn't quite long enough and it is binding the valve on the end of the hose. I was listening to it closer today and then messed with some of the lines and it amplified when I wiggled that. So I put on a longer hose to see. It sounds better so far, but like I said, it only does it after going for a while so I will see if that fixes it or not. It sure as heck sounds like it is coming from the TC though, but it is so hard to tell by ear alone :bonk: Need to get a new mechanics stethescope I guess
