cat delete?

Talk about modifications, or anything else associated with performance enhancements. Have a new idea for performance/reliability? Post it here. No idea is stupid! (please use Detailing and Appearance for cosmetic ideas)

no, you can get tune the Rear 02 Sensor out of the PCM, or get the $50 resistor that makes it seem like the cat is there and working. If you ever sell the car you can get in trouble, or if a cop is a real stickler for the rules he can look and give you a ticket.

I've ran cat-delete before, and I wouldn't recommend it. I had no gains form it, and I did have a VERY free flowing exhaust otherwise. I would recommend getting a performance cat. It'll allow your exhaust to breath fully, and still keep you 50 state legal (hefty fines if caught without one).

Agreed. I wouldn't do it either after having done both.

Difference between a high performance cat and no cat at all besides legality and SES lights is only a fraction of a horsepower. I wouldn't bother.

yeah that's kinda what I thought I guess some cars benefit more than others from a cat delete

And just because you won't get caught doesn't mean it's a good idea. It's illegal, but more importantly it hurts our planet.
I'm not saying go green and buy a prius, but every little bit helps! Leave it in for mother nature.

I don't really see that your mod list would currently benefit from a deleted cat. I ran without one for a short period of time and didn't really notice a difference either. I'm not sure if i agree on the "fraction of a horsepower" statement though as you would have to dyno with and without to know for sure and i think that certain setups gain a lot more than a fraction.

I got that from an actual dyno test. Not my car but someone I know with a GTP.

Though a heavily modified car would of course gain more than a fraction. Most cars wouldn't ever reach that level though.

That truck may have not come factory with a cat, however.

I'd, leave the cat on. I've done a few hollowed out cats over the years and it really doesn't help. In the bad old days of first generation cats that constantly plugged up, needed air injection pumps, etc,etc.. it was an issue...now days, cats are better made, less restrictive, and not much of a hinderance to the motor (cheaper too). Occassionally you'll see one gummed up and need a new one, but it's a rarer occurance.

it's a 91 it did come with one the muffler fell off (the truck is old) and my dad had duals ran but it did have a cat on it originally i'm sure. I knew it was gonna be my truck so I paid attention to everything on it.
i'm probably gonna leave the cat on unless I have trouble with it down the road

I'd upgrade to the High Flow Magnaflow cat. It flows better, and is legal.

Whether you have emissions testing or not, in all 50 states, it's ILLEGAL (federal law, federal offense with a hefty fine) to run without. I still run with one. I found a way around it with my cutout for the track, but it took alot of mods for it to make a difference.

The difference on the Zilla is MAYBE 1 or 2 TENTHS on the quarter mile by opening the cutout before the cat. Go hi-flow. You stay legal, it SOUNDS better, and you don't lose anything.

My exhaust sounded a lot raspier without the cat in.

Most find exactly the opposite to be true. The cat acts as a resonator of sorts, which helps to prevent resonance and raspiness.
