Post your "WTF was I thinking?" mods...

Post by sandrock »

Every once in a while, a gem of an idea pops into ones mind on a new mod...one that isn't generally recognized as being a standard mod. Over the course of several years, I've come up with several...the aluminum L67 valve covers (I think I was one of the first ones to do it, not sure though), the OBD2 conversion for S1s (By now it probably would have been perfected had the motor not gone south), shaving the antenna, etc.

But this one...this one deserves its own title...the "WTF" of ideas, if you will. I ran across pictures of this mod when I was going through my photobucket account. At the time, it seemed like a good idea, and it actually worked, but it just didn't look right, and in the end, I chucked the idea out the door.

Wanna know what it was??

Yup. I skinned the seat, put in the heat/massage pad, reassembled, and relished the thought of AL7 comfort and the added bennies of massage and heat.

My best WTF mod was tearing apart a power converter and trying to fab the outlets into the console fo my truck. Currently the outlets are installed, but I dropped the converter itself while installing and broke the mainboard.... maybe someday I'll get another converter and finish it up.... lol

Was it the remote and wire that didn't look right? That addition would be awesome IMO....

The pad was too thick. This gave the seat a more "poofy" appearance than I liked, plus it hindered some of the functions.

9005 bulbs in the low beams and a relay harness for the low beams only. It works superbly.

However, the harness is duct-taped to my battery. So an A for the idea, another A for outcome, C for implementation.

Also this pressure brake bleeder I'm working on. Good idea, so far the implementation isn't quite working...

Attempting to turn my daily driver into a 12sec car. #-o

When everything works, there's an unhealthy correlation between the smile on my face and the position of the boost gauge. This is the third time this car has been down for more than a week though. First was for the initial build and trans swap, then it was down while I replaced a fragged LSD, and now it's getting a new engine since the original popped a piston. You pay to play I guess. :angry7:

Dumping about 5 grand into a totaled '93 SSEi with 185,000 miles on it. STILL worth every penny to me though :)

Buying a G8 to use as a winter beater...?

Rebuilding the tranny and dropping in a reman engine with roller rockers that ends up being slower?

Reflective BONNEVILLE SSE decals I had on the rocker panels for a few years?

There is still a certain level of coolness to all of your "WTF" mods.

My best WTF mod was red tinting the light covers and installing red 141 bulbs in my 89. Oh don't worry, its still sexy after 19 years.

Others have done the L26 top swap to an L36, but maybe I'll be the first one to do it to a Bonneville. You can gain more power with it, I'm aware.

Isn't your best "WTF mod" that you tore your entire car apart and then stopped working on it? :booty:
