Toasted my motor. The rebuild pg 3. It's Alive! 12/18 pg. 4
Bad News! I was out testing, hit the throttle a little, not even 80% or so and I heard a crappy noise, not too loud, but the car bogged out and died. It didn't want to start too bad, but I got it going and limped it home. Noticed as it was sitting in the driveway that there was very little oil pressure. The gauge isn't bottomed out, but pretty close. Pressure increased with increased RPM, but not by much. There is now a nice loud clanking noise with increased throttle. Seems to idle just fine, but without much in oil pressure. Well the oil pressure is perfect right when you start it, but as it idles the pressure goes down. I gave it a little throttle a couple of times and it boggs out and dies. Pulled all the spark plugs and they look perfect, no fouling, all gaps are equal still. The oil smells a little like gas. Compression seems fine. Pulled the valve covers and everything is where it should be and there are no loose bolts. Preload on the rods seems fine still. Talked to Thomas about it and it is probably either a cam bearing or a rod bearing. Either way the block may be shot, and I just don't have that kind of cash sitting around to fix it. I don't know what I am going to do. The wife is pissed to say the least. Now I guess I am riding my bike to work from now on. Car may be out of commission for a very long time to come without a miracle

That sucks beyond belief, Jared. I've been there too. At this point, you might as well drop the oil pan and pull a couple rod caps to see what you're up against.

Oh Nooo!!!! :sad5:
Sounds like what happened to the Grizz.
Ya, drop the pan to be sure but it sounds like a spun rod bearing. It was bad enough to need a new crank. Final cost we me doing all the work to swap a rebuilt long block was $4000. :sad5:
Your best option might be to find a good used engine and do a swap.

Is the long block out of my black car still available? I think haro would probably give you a good deal.

Sounds like to me as well that the bearings are toast. Sorry man, hope it all works itself out somehow for ya, and soon.

That is what I was thinking too. I have already started to tear it down a little, but I got frustrated and just decided to step away for a while. Will probably take a closer look tomorrow and pull the pan off.willwren wrote:That sucks beyond belief, Jared. I've been there too. Already email Morad and some more local places around. There are a few up in Portland. Too bad I don't live up there any more. But shipping will be less the closer it is to me too. Maybe I will just get a L32 bottom end and maybe this one will become a builder if it isn't screwed up.

Yeah, that is where I have lined up a few that are closer. There are a lot, but I am going to be picky on this one and pick a pretty low mileage one.olblueeyesbonne wrote:http://www.car-part.com is your friend.

Are going to plan any upgrades while you're at it......like true forged pistons?

Re: Toasted my motor
Yeah, forged pistons would be fun, but like I said, I can't even pay for the repair now as it is. There just isn't any money available. I just bought a house and a business in the same month and I have absolutely no disposable income for this. What sucks is it is my wife's daily driver and now she is a little pissed off that she doesn't have a car any more. So I get to ride my bike to work 2 miles each way in the snow. It was about 6*F this morning. That was fun.

Re: Toasted my motor
That's the crappy thing, I wasn't even really tuning or getting on it at all. Just out for a little stroll around the block to wash it down with oil and get things going well. Wasn't even worth the ride.2000Silverbullet wrote:Oh Jared.... we feel your pain.

Well I dropped the oil pan. I can't see anything overtly bad. there are one or two small chunks in the pan that actually look like tensioner pieces that I have found before and you saw the tensioner I took out earlier. There are a few small metal flakes, but not much. The most noticable is that I put in brand new oil just after putting everything back together and now it is black as it would be if I would have driven 3,000 miles on it and it is now metallic oil. Looks just like metallic paint would. Nothing big, just microscopic metal flake everywhere. Looking at the cam bearings they don't look messed up looking up from the bottom and I don't see any issues with the rod bearings, but I haven't tried pulling anything out yet to inspect.

Yup. Just exactly like the Grizz's pan looked like.it is now metallic oil. Looks just like metallic paint would. Nothing big, just microscopic metal flake everywhere.
