Most will never need it. It is for when you are building heavily and have a pulley small enough that the belt slips upon rapid accelleration. Even at my level I don't experience any slip. GP tensioner/front idler are different and I could see where they would get more slip than the H body belt configuration.

I can definitely see a benefit to doing this. Just like the big dogs, and you know what they sound like!

When I ran the 2.9" I burned off a new belt and it was the correct size, due to slippage at the track in two runs.

Pretty cool, but maybe he should slot the pulleys on the sides a bit to allow the small ammount of air, instantly compressed between the belt and pulley to escape.

I'm kind of with Bill on this.
its pointless to add that much rotational mass to the SC belt system and run such a large SC pulley, that sucka would be better suited if it were a 2.4" SC pulley and being drivin by 500 FWHP..

That is my point exactally...
I can run a 2.8 on pump gas with no belt slip.
I can run a 2.6 at the track with race gas of course and even under the racing conditions, "shifting at 6600 rpms" I don't have belt slip but... in my defense I have the right balance of idler & tensioner pulleys and my belt is on really tight. I have to put the belt on the SC pulley then slip that pulley over the hub, I don't have enough slack in my belt to slip over the ridge of the SC pulley other-wise.

92-95 SSEi's all have a certain amount of slip on hard accel. I proved it on both of my own cars. This is due to poor belt wrap on the stock configuration. I solved it with the addition of a single extra idler.

I agree on the S2 it's more a cool conversation piece than a practical mod.

It's odd you see this issue on both your cars. Can't say it's true on all 92-95's though, my 95 had zero slip with stock 2.8 or aftermarket 2.5 pullies. The 95 I picked up later and resold quickly has no slip issues either. Not sure why that is..but it would seem GM wouldn't engineer in slip.

GM didn't engineer in slip, and it was their first pass with this application. Note the improved belt path and wrap on the S2?

And I gaurantee you had it and didn't know it. I did too, and didn't know it. On stock pulleys, it's fine for the most part, but when you pulley down, it's not the amount of boost you get, but how QUICKLY the gauge spikes. If you don't believe it, install an extra idler on one and do a before/after comparison. I have on both cars.

With the idler in place, boost builds dramatically faster during instant accelleration, even though I had no earlier indication of any belt slip.

As a better explanation, with the extra idler, my boost peaks on throttle stab in half the time it normally did. Both cars, three different brands of belts. My findings on the Zilla carried over to further testing 2 years later on the SLE.

Give the guy an A for effort, but I wonder if it's needed. Since the Bonnevilles already have a better SC tensioner assembly than the GTPs, that's a cheap upgrade for those that don't have it already. Another cheap upgrade is the Gates belts, much better grip than the Goodyear Gatorbacks. And if someone really needs more grip there's always an 8 rib setup like had.
