Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer

Post by Marmot »

My Bonnevizzle certainly has seen better days. I am hoping to drive it for two more winters and then anything after that would be a bonus in my mind.

My main concern is the transmission has issues in the winter. Today, I am going to replace the tranny filte and add Lucas Transmission Fix. A local mechanic recommended the Lucas Transmission Fix. I also found that it is recommended by several Pontiac Bonneville Club members.

While browsing the isle at Fleet Farm, I came across Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer. Anyone have experience with this product? Is it worth $10? I don't have any known "motor oil" issues. As I stated above, I am hoping to get a couple years of life from this car. I am wondering if spending $10 on an oil additive today might buy me some additional drive time on this ride.

cant comment on the oil stabilizer as i've never used it, but i doubt you need it. Did you find the trans fix at fleet farm? i work there, and we don't stock it at my store.

With only 157,000 on it, you shouldn't need anything like that anytime soon. I have just over 200,000 on my '93 SSEi and I drive it like I stole it, using Mobile 1 10W-30 fully synthetic oil. The regular dino juice oil will do fine as well.

I have used it before, but only in my woods toy that leaked oil badly and had a bad knock. It survived for two years of mud bogging, trail riding, and just general getting the snot beat out of it before the engine finally grenaded at 6000 RPM.

Is the Lucas heavy duty oil stabalizer good stuff? I think so. Would I use it or recommend it in a daily driven vehicle that has no problems with oil pressure or knock? Nope. Stick with plain oil. We have many cars here with well over 200,000 miles on them and have only used oil ( synthetic or not ) all of the cars life.

I actually found the trans fix at Wally World. I had to go to NAPA to find Sea Foam Trans Tune. Fleet Farm has the Lucas oil stabilizer.

Which Fleet Farm are you at? I frequent the Fleet Farm in Brainerd/Baxter.

I am suspicious of the mileage. I bought this car from an uncle 3-1/2 years ago. I have put on 65K since I bought it from him. My uncles have been known to have "issues" with odometer cables.

Well, rest assured...there are no cables to mess with on these cars. Everything is done electrically.

However, clusters could easily be swapped.
2005 GXP - White Gold Pearl, no mods...yet.
2000 SSEi - Resurrection in progress. Built L67 w/L32 fuel rail, ported heads, and cam. Camaro front brake system, GXP cluster, and much more in planning.

I used the Lucas TransFix stuff last September, and IMO, it did more damage than good. I put it in and my transmission started whistling and whining and doing all sorts of crazy things. The whining was so bad that it sounded like a supercharger! I drove it like that for a week hoping it would settle down - it didn't. I took it to a transmission shop, and they told me it was gone and I needed a transmission replacement. I originally put it in because I was having problems with harsh and sluggish shifts.

I decided to put some SeaFoam TransTune in and the MINUTE that went in, the whining/whistling and hard/sluggish shifting STOPPED dead in it's tracks. I was stunned. I drove it about a week to let the TransTune work, and then I had it flushed and refilled at Midas. Needless to say, I have had ZERO problems with my transmission in over a year.

I have no explanation for it - I've always heard Lucas made good stuff. But there is a MAJOR difference in the two products. Lucas is extremely thick, and SeaFoam TransTune is as thin as water. Some have said that my transmission was starving for fluid, and the Lucas made the trans fluid thicker, thereby starving it even more. Adding the SeaFoam thinned it back out, and solved the problem. I really have no idea - all I know is that my transmission is perfect now, over a year after I thought it was toast.

It could have also been a combination of the two products that solved the problem. What I do know for sure is that the whining stopped when I put the SeaFoam in.

well they are 2 completely different products, designed for completely different purposes

seafoam is almost corrosive... designed to clean out valve bodies, solenoids, etc. and be flushed soon after
the lucas is thick, designed to condition clutches, seals, stop slipping, etc. and is run untill you would normally flush again.

We have a big gallon jug of Lucas Oil stabilizer we got at Runnings, and use it in our older vehicles. (65 C60 Grain Truck) I don't have any proof it does any good, but it hasn't hurt anything.

Auto-RX. I hope to show the benefits when I tear apart my LIM.

Google it, look at the before-and-after photos and the progress reports.

I've used it with good results in this current Buick.

Don't add anything to your oil. Your engine will outlast 3 transmissions.

If you have trans issues, run trans-tune (seafoam) for about 100 miles, then drop the pan and change the filter. This will also change about 1/3 of your fluid.

If you still have issues, run the Lucas.

If you still have issues, she's a goner soon.

Both cars in my sig are on their second trans. Been there, done that.

I've used Lucas Oil Stabalizer in some of my vehicles, and depending on the vehicle and the problems you are having, it is good stuff. Like Will said, probably wouldn't use it in a 3800 or any newer cars with tighter tolerance engines because it is thick.
I used Lucas Oil Stabalizer in a 1990 454SS pick up I had. It was consuming oil and had some leakage. Adding Lucas slowed the consumption and increased my oil pressure 5 psi. But it was a big block with over 100K miles. 3.73 gears with a TH400 3 speed auto=3500RPM at 75MPH. It needed some help.

As for Sea Foam Trans Tune, great stuff. Had a Chevy Celebrity with 3 speed auto that was shifting "funny" when it got hot. Added Trans Tune, and it cured it. I have Trans Tune in the PAU right now. Going to put some miles on it, drain it, new filter, and install an adjustable modulator.
Needs more blower whine!

I just returned home from northwestern Minnesota after driving grain truck throughout the month of October. I mostly helped with the sugar beet harvest. I drove a couple of circa 1975 C70s and a circa 1967 C65. I know the C70s are running 427s. I am not sure what is under the hood in the C65. These old Chevies were real dogs though compared to the diesel rig I drove most of the time. **loves diesel**

What does your C60 have in it?

A good ole 292 I6. For a 6 cylinder, It has quite a bit of power. It has the 4 speed transmission with a 2 speed rear end, so you split each gear. We are out of crop farming, but it was on an auction this summer, and we need a truck like that to haul scrap and other stuff in, and it was at a good price, so we bought it. 52k miles, excellent condition, it has oil spots all over the paint, must've sat underneath a combine that let loose a hydraulic line for the auger, so the paint on the sheet metal is bad, but other than that it is in excellent condition. What was left of the owner's manual was in the glove box, and all the maintenance was on the latch area of the driver's side door.

The only difference between these pics and how it is now is that we had new, legal steel semi wheels and semi tires installed on the front, as the old tires were shot, and the wheels were illegal to re-mount tires to. $1k for the set, and if we ever get a flat on the rear, it is going to need all new wheels and tires, $2k for those, since there is 4. We just used 10 lug semi wheels and used every other hole, as it is a 5 lug pattern, just half of a semi 10 lug. Sorry for the massive threadjack, LOL.

Yeah, those Chevies are fun to drive, but rather short on power when loaded (especially after driving diesel) I think this is the only C70 pic I have.

This is the diesel rig I was driving. Cat motor with a 4.11 rearend and 9-speed transmission. This pic is probably about 27-28 ton.

We had her loaded pretty good with old nasty hay and compost, and she still pulled. Those I6's, whereas they don't have the high revving Horsepower, they have tons of torque.
