Best tires recommendation?

I just got tripletreds for my '89 yesterday. $566 mounted and balanced minus $80 ($40 for a gift card, $40 for a rebate) which come up to about $485. Sears was having a good sale last week :D

Look, tires are expensive but they're also the only 4 patches of just a couple square inches that connects your car to the road. They're important. Think of the money put into tires as a worthy investment: your life and your car. If you use crappy tires expect crappy performance when you need it most (swerving, icy roads, emergency braking, wet spots, black ice, hydroplaning, etc).

yea, you got a good deal. The thing is im going to only be using my 16" rims for the winter with the tires i have now with the remaining tread. But as soon as spring come in, the GXP's are going to be on the car with new tires. Thats why i dont want to invest anything expensive right now.

But don't you need the better tires now for winter? I'd rather use a set of no-name cheapie tires in the summer than in the winter on icy roads...

It is possible to get a decent set used but don't buy a set purely on the amount of tread on the tire. Check out the brand and model and do a couple minutes worth of research on tirerack.com and google to be sure you aren't getting low-end tires either way.

Tires are the ONLY thing that keeps you on the road, slows the car, accelerates the car, etc.

Sacrificing tires is sacrificing EVERYTHING the car can do, for fun, or safety. I've rear ended someone not because of the car itself, but because my tires weren't up to the task. I will never make that mistake again.

All seasons will not perform well below 30-35* either. Braking distances are significantly shorter on proper tires in the proper season.

Well, im going to get the winter or all season tires for the winter new. The brand is called GT Radial. I know, I know there not the best but ive asked people with those tires and they said there not bad for the Price. There tread looks very good as well.

Im about to really invest in my tires because i really found out yesterday how important they are. I had my life on the line, and my tires had something to do with it along with traction control and of course my driving attributes. Anyways, I am just going to get quality tires, i dont care how much it costs.

I'm also looking into getting winter tires. With over 100 inches last year in the Madtown area and no 4x4 this year I'm thinking it'd be a good idea. I've narrowed it down to Blizzaks from Bridgestone or the Xice from Michelin. (or if anyone has other makes) More than likely the Blizzaks in 215/60/17 which are almost the same size. Close enough that it won't affect speedo reading. My question is does anyone have these or know of somebody who does? If so how do they handle dry roads, such as road noise, tire "feel" when taking an offramp etc, wear Etc. Also does it give more static shocks exiting the car with the silca compound or is there enough carbon in it to not make a noticeable difference. I've watched the videos and read the write ups on tirerack.com I just would like a "seat of the pants" opinion. 'cause even with all that snow the roads are pretty clear most of the time. Thanks

Never heard of a "GT Radial".

troia I have the X-Ice. I went with them over the Blizzaks because they'll be better in the scary stuff than blizzaks. My car has much better handling/sportier than a bonneville as well, IMO getting "high performance" winter tires for a Bonneville is a waste of time when you could have better performance in winter for the same, or less price.

The X-Ice Xi2 is a SCREAMING deal for a tire made by michelin. I usually consider them very overpriced for what you get in summer and A/S selections, but they hit a great price point here...

You said yourself they're made in China... does that give you any clue as to their level of "quality"?

Tires are made by all manufacturers all around the world. They all share plants together, and the like. They could be made next to a production line for Michelin Pilot Sport Cup for all we know. Which factories are being used is more important when it comes to R-Comps, and other competition level tires. I like to stick to proven names in the business.

Thanks, for the feedback but I want to clear something up. Just so i'm clear x ice and the blizzaks are overkill? or just the blizzaks or is the X-Ice Xi2 a "lower performance" tire than the X-Ice (I thought the X Ice and the Xi2 were the same but It was the Xi2 I was looking at. I got mine from Tire Rack For $585 Shipped, and another $60 for mounting, balancing and valve stems, so $645 total. Are canadian prices that much inflated?

I just payed $950 for my Triple Treads today...

No joke.

I opted out of some of the extra road hazard stuff and as far as rotation and inspections go... I can do that myself or even if I do pay someone else its not going to be anywhere near worth an extra $500...

I can still add Road Hazard for 14 days, if i decide it's necessary. Tire Rack, FTW!!
