92 SE Water Pump- a Cry for Help!
Hi folks,
Need some help with a water pump job on my '92 SE. Have the parts, have the silicone, now all I need to know is if I need to take out the motor mount to get the thing loose. Kinda looks like it does... and I have read in many places that you need to. I just don't know if mine is that sort.
If anyone has any pics, that would be completely awesome.
I just need to get rolling again, and I need to not go in blind and cause myself more problems!
Any help anyone can give will be incredibly appreciated.
I wanna get this done tomorrow while the weather in Philly holds!
Thanks!

Re: 92 SE Water Pump- a Cry for Help!
You have to remove the mount.
Do yourself a favor, and take the mount stud nut for the stud that goes into the block and get a grade 8 bolt to replace the stud. It'll make putting the mount back in easier, and later removal for any reason. When you get to the point of taking the mount out, you'll know what I mean.

Any way of telling what engine I have or something that may shed some light on the subject?
Any pics or anything?
There is a bracket sort of thing over the front half of the pump...looks like the bolts go through the bracket and into the pump...I am assuming this is the mount.

With your 92, you will have to remove the mount.

I thought the same thing on a S2 since the mount is larger and wraps more. It may be possible to do it w/o taking the mount off. The amount of time and effort working in a much more cramped space is most likely not worthwhile though. Toss a block of wood and jack under the pan and that mount will be off quicker than you think.

There is one bolt that has a relief in the mount, that if you have the right wrench (which I'm not sure exists), you can loosen the bolt. But you won't be able to pull the bolt out far enough to clear the hole in the timing cover. I tried. You have to take it off.
Here you go. You won't be able to get this bolt out. Peeking through the hole there.

Re: 92 SE Water Pump- a Cry for Help!
Okay, I'm biting the bullet... three bolts on the motor mount go into the block, right? are they 18mm? If not, what size are they? I need to go get a socket. None of mine are big enough!
So the three come out, the mount comes loose from the block, and then should I remove the long bolt that connects the two halves, or should I just take out the two holding the part to the frame and lift out the whole assembly as one piece?
Thanks guys, you've been lifesavers!

Re: 92 SE Water Pump- a Cry for Help!
You'll need to remove the half mounted to the frame, or at least loosen it to give you wiggle room. That half actually has 4 bolts. There's two underneath that you just need to loosen whether you remove that half or not, because they are slotted to the edge of the bracket.
If you get the bolt like I mentioned earlier, it'll give you the extra room so you won't have to do anything to the frame half again. The bolts into the block are 18mm, the bolt I got is 19mm, the frame mount bolts are 15mm

Do NOT over-jack the motor in order to get that mount out. The bare minimum ONLY. Over-jacking can cause the passenger axle tripod to seperate. If you're nervous about that, I strongly suggest you remove the axle nut on the passenger side first and whack the end of the axle with a wood or rubber mallet to release it from the hub BEFORE jacking the motor. Replacing that stud with a bolt will prevent having to ever jack the motor again. That's good advice.

Re: 92 SE Water Pump- a Cry for Help!
Okay, got all the bolts loose finally, BUT-
is there a sleeve or something that needs to be tapped out that joins the two halves of the mount together? I took the long bolt out of the mount, but the two halves (Now loose from the block and the frame, respectively) will not separate... drove myself nuts last night, now I have a sore lower back and arms, and the *dang* water pump still is stuck in there...laughing at me from bhind the mount...
Thanks for the guidance, guys. It has actually made this much easier, despite my frequent questions. Almost there...I'm gonna take this *dang* hill, sarge!

Re: 92 SE Water Pump- a Cry for Help!
Taking the long bolt out from them should uncouple them. Maybe they just need a good whack with a mallet?

Due to my previous experience with 'mature' GM cars, I figured that was probably the case, I just wanted some confirmation before I started randomly beating on*ahem*, I mean encouraging parts to separate...J Wikoff wrote:Taking the long bolt out from them should uncouple them. Re: 92 SE Water Pump- a Cry for Help!
Well, I did it!
Thanks for the help. The breakthrough moment was realizing that I was not jacking the engine far enough...the top of the power steering pump was hitting the bar between the front struts before it was high enough to free that $%£%$! motor mount! What a pain! The pump itself was a breeze though, thank goodness.
