Vibration around 65-75

Post by troia »

I'm having a vibration prob that i can't seem to fix. Driving down the road it drives fine until i get to 65 -75 then I get a vibration in the front. Here is what I've changed or had done to try to get rid of it. Balanced tires (twice) replaced front rotors and pads with new, replaced left tie rod end (right is good) changed drivers wheel hub, changed front struts and strut bearings. Also rotated tires and rotated again when that didn't help. Gets kind of worse if I go over small bumps and such. Any help would be appreciated. 2003 ssei 82000

Are there new tires recently when this started?

How perfectly did they set the alignment when the struts were replaced. I suggest that the alignment be set to optimum; don't accept "Well it's within the limits so we didn't change it."

Check the bushings on the A-arm which they should check as part of the alignment.

If it doesn't happen all the time, you might have a caliper dragging and heating up the rotor causing a feeling of unbalanced wheel as it hits the high spot on the damaged rotor.

Otherwise my money is on the tires. Have a Hunter Road Force balance done very carefully on the wheels. Have them use the highest sensitivity setting.
Find the area shops that use a 9700 balancer here

I recommend a Pontiac, Cadillac, Buick store that has experience with trouble shooting the balance problems from uneven tires and wheels when these cars were new. There were some TSBs about other parts that might be a factor when the cars were new, and those parts might be a factor after wearing for 80K miles.

Thats my thought also, seems like an unbalanced tire. I'll be taking it in later on fri to have it balanced again and look over the other suspension pieces.

Its a common problem on 2000+ Bonnevilles. I have it and its very prone with the OEM Goodyear RS-A tires.

Usually people try many different brands of tires till they find one that eliminates this problem. I deal with it.

(Goodyear RS-A's are garbage tires) :-$

Although I agree that the RSA's are possibly the cause, I also agree with checking the bushings, which I will be changing first in my quest to eliminate the 65MPH shimmy. I actually think now the problem originates from the rear suspension.

Was there an alignment done on all 4?

Have the wheels been checked on a RoadForce Balancer?

I had the same problem, did all the same things, and finally changed the cv axles and the vibrations are essentially gone. Good luck.

alignment on all 4 and balanced. Would cv axles show any other sign before they go bad? It's better now but still not quite like it was before new brakes (although the old rotors were warped so it might have had the shakes and I didn't feel it) : :) wink: Thanks for all the replys maybe I should replace the rears now  Also the tires are Cooper Lifeliner Touring sle. They were on the car and thinking of replacing before winter. Anyone have and experience with these? They have been pretty good tires but would like to get some ideas what people have on their rides for good all season.

I replaced my CV axles and the shaking got worse. I have had the wheels balanced, the wheel/tires balanced, and an alignment done aswell.

I suspect now when you do a tire rotation, you'll feel the out-of-balance change with the tire position.

Did you have the tires balanced with Road Force balancing to see how round they are?

When I was facing this same issue and had mine rotated and balanced I did notice a difference. It actually made the car feel like it was pulling to the right or left (can't remember) after going back three times they found I had a bent rim. The new rim did take a lot of the vibration out but not all. After trying everything I found on the old site there was to try... aliment, new tire, road force balance, new lower control arms and having the car looked over a few times by the dealer and a independent shop, dealer even used some kind of a vibration analyzer. None of this completely fixed my issue and up to this point with the balance of the old tires first, then new tires, one rim, road force balance and having my car at the shop several times I spent somewhere around 1500 dollars for everything and it still did not completely eliminate it.

When I was picking my car up the dealer told me I was in need of new front brakes... Guess what? My front rotors apparently were slightly warped, not enough that you could fell anything when braking but enough that this was the cause for the vibration. This worked for about three months or so, then the vibration came back. I bought new rotors since turning the old ones didn't last.

Good luck with yours [-o< I hope you find the cause without spending a lot

I think I'm gonna have my rotors turned now :) It's cheap and if it works then I'll sure be happy

A mechanic friend of mine once told me is you feel the vibration in the sterring wheel it's in the front. If you feel it in the seat and floor it's the back. My rears are toast and they vibrate at that speed.
