tires for the GXP

I absolutely need four new tires on the GXP. These have been on since Nov 2006.
I need suggestions for the BEST ROAD GRIP. Not peeling out, not all that other fancy crap. I need tires that really hold the road.

Suggestions?

You should check out http://www.tirerack.com If the link worked correctly that should show tires for a stock 04 GXP. If you click on Survey results you can get a better idea how the tires compare.

It's a really cool site with consumer reviews and lots of useful info. I used it to find good performing all season tires for my car and couldn't be more happier with the results.

I also need tires next year for my GXP. I know that many will disagree but I have had no prolbems with the GY RSAs. They have 35K and still have about 15K left in good tread.
I can't say they excel in any one area, however.

The problem with tires is every individual EXPECTS something different from a set of tires.
One guy wants quiet, another snow traction, another burnout grip, and another wants them to last forever. You have to really decide which you want and rarely can you have more than one good characteristic.

My driving conditions are variable. Wife drives. I drive. Rain. Heat. Winter. etc. etc.
I need all around capabilities.

I will say that I replaced the (stock) Bridgestone Duelers on my Tahoe with Michilen LTXs and the difference was night and day. (and about $300 more money)

I am looking forward to hearing the suggestions for the GXP and the important characteristics of each brand.

Its hilly here with lots of rain and occasional snow. I want all seasons since I rarely take the GXP out in bad conditions.
As I said above, grip is most important.

I looked up Triple Treds on both TireRack.com and call the local shop. Neither has them. Look like what I want. Am I missing something?

Looks like the only Triple Treds that are 18" are P225/50R18. Would the thinner tire work on the GXP rims. Obviously it's not ideal, but if he were to want to use them could he?

I love the Bridgestone Potenza RE750
Handles well in the warm dry and wet but wouldn't use them in the cold wet or snow.

I roll on some Bridgestone Potenza RE960 All seasons and they are awesome, not to mention cheaper than the OE Goodyears. They are quiet even at high speeds but can get loud on hard turns but that can be expected. I've taken exit ramps at 50 mph without getting too much screaming. Just the other day I had some hotshot in some newer Ford Focus riding my ass on the interstate and I sped up going up a cloverleaf and he started getting squirrelly in my rear-view mirror and then I started leaving him fast, he probably got scared and braked hard .

I've only had them for about 6 months now and have no real experience in the snow but they seem to handle well in rain and extremely well in dry weather.

Well, after looking at bankruptcy to buy four tires, I looked at lots of ratings and went with the BF Goodrich G-force TA KDWS.

Lots of thanks to FRENETICBURN and J-ROD for pointing me to tirerack.com. Saved bundles over what the local tire places wanted.

We'll see if I like them or not. Didn't have $800 for the Eagles, which looked good, and didn't see the Potenza's listed.

@ $82 a piece, I very happy with the G-forces. I got them at TireRack also. On my second set. Pretty good traction last winter and great in the rain. With a steep long driveway (over a 1/4 miles) ice covered all winter and the excessive wheel spin I'm prone to its hard for me to judge wear. I got 18,000 out the the OEM RSa's and 16,000 out of my G-force's. With a price comparison of $243 versus $82, I'll take the G-force I like the tread design as well. It's ultra wide rain grooves make it look manly.

I bought this same tire about 2 months ago. Love them!! GY RS-A is what I replaced. Terrible tread wear and the H4S grips like a dream wet or dry in comparison to the GYs. Why anyone spends the kinda $$ on the GS-A I don't understand. Better performance, less cost. Two thumbs up......I'll have to get back with ya on the snow traction.

BTW H4S has a better grip rating than the triple treads. With my 17in rims I saved over $150 a set.

Sorry to resurrect an old topic but as we approach spring alot of people start buying new tires and I thought I would post my observations.

I have an '05 GXP that I bought new in August of '07 that like all the others was fitted at the factory with Eagle RS-A's...

Given that I am a wholesale tire distributor by trade that doesn't sell Goodyear I wanted something else immediately. I had previous experience with them most recently on my '00 GTP and was not overly impressed.
Given that my wife is a bean counter and has the ability to cut me off I listened to her when she stated there was nothing wrong with them and I could replace them when they were worn out.

So as my search increased in the last month or so here is what I came up with:
Of what tires I stocked in the factory size (235/50R18) here were my choices.

Falken ZE-912

I have driven on these before and they are great! Very predictable with excellent ride and wet weather performance. Depending on where you get them they can be pricey though.

BFG KDWS
Good tire; especially at the price the Tire Rack is offering them at right now. I have employees and friends that have had these and while good in the rain the noise as they wear out is a bit much. Also the ride quality is not always the best.

This was my first choice as they are great tires with exceptional ride quality but this tire, although a carbon copy of the Falken ZE-912 (MFG same factory), is not M&S rated which is very important to me.

Michelin.... too expensive period!
Continental.... also too expensive
Yokohama... nothing made to fit
Cooper / Mastercraft... nothing made to fit
Hankook..... No thank you (didn't even look to see if they offer anything to fit)

I ended up getting a deal from one of my mfg reps on:
Nitto Invo which is a fairly new tire from them.

I had to go up one size to 245/50R18 as they don't make this tire in the 235's (NT555 is offered in 235/50R18 but also is not M&S) and while they are a tight fit on the stock wheels in relation to the front struts they do fit.

Although I only have about 150 miles on them so far it is raining here today and on a 75 mile run up north today in the wet I can say they are excellent in all aspects so far. Quiet with a very smooth ride quality, excellent grip in both wet and dry with stable tracking. I was skeptical because of the tread design but so far it seems to work.

In comparison to the RS-A's it is night and day.. so much so that I think I can hear a hub bearing making noise that I would have never heard over the growl of the Goodyears .

If they last as long as the Goodyear tires it will even be that much better of a choice!
