Fuel pump troubleshooting

Post by blye »

Hi,
My 1999 SSEi failed to start today after sitting a few weeks and it seems its the fuel pump. Spraying a bit of gas in the intake gets the car to start for a second or two, so ignition is working.
I removed the fuel filter and turned the key to run, and nothing comes out of the fuel line. I cant be sure if I can hear the fuel pump noise, but if it was then it was very quiet.

Anyways I was reading the post: https://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com/f ... c4515.html which mentions a green primer connector by the battery. Looking all around the battery I cannot see anything like it. Does the 99 SSEi have this connector?

If anyone knows, under the car by the tank, which connector goes to the fuel pump, and what is the wiring for the connector?

Thank you! :canada:

You need a fuel gauge to properly check you pressure and flow.
thank you

Try bypassing the fuel pump relay at the fuse/relay center under the RH dash. The wiring diagram is here: https://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com/f ... 48336.html

Thank you, this helped. The relay was clicking, proper power.
At the fuel pump connector by the tank, I got power at the grey wire for 2 seconds as expected. However fuel pump did not activate. Between the black and the grey wire, there was about 800 ohms.
After applying 12v to the grey wire and grounding the black, the pump did not activate, and now it reads dead short, so I must have finally finished off the pump.

So I guess I have to drop the tank and look at the condition of the sender and pump, to determine if I only need to replace the pump if the rest of it is not too corroded.

That's a task but at least you've got it narrowed down.

Just a follow-up..
I replaced the fuel pump with a Delphi unit from RA. Works great now.
Dropping the tank was not as hard as I thought it would be. The hardest part is removing the rubber fuel fill hose and vent hose as the tank is being lowered.
Also there is a rear brake line blocked by the tank and mine was incredibly rusty. You should probably replace that brake line while you're in there. Its a small section with flare nuts on each end so it looks easy to replace.
