What's that noise?

Post by CHRIS904 »

Did an oil change today. Underneath car you can hear clatter thought it was harmonic balancer at first but sounds like it's coming from transmission/engine area. Not audible up top very quiet.

I would start by pulling the belt and running it to see if there's still a noise.

Is the oil pressure good warmed up at idle?

Yes the oil pressure is fine my gauge is hokie but I did manually test it never went below 35 psi at idle. The sound goes away almost after it's warm and seems to be coming from were tranny and engine bolt up. I have a stethoscope coming today maybe I'll be able to pinpoint. The sound is hardly audible at start and once driven can't be heard at all.

Between the engine and trans the only things I can think of is a cracked flexplate or loose torque converter bolts. No rhyme or reason for those to go away when it's hit though.

Lifter clatter can go away once warmed up.

I would still pull the belt. It's fast and free. Sometimes metalic sounds get transmitted through hard parts away from their actual location.
