death shake options

Post by carl »

My rear drivers side sf center mount went out with rust. The hole was completely punched out with rust, so using a standard replacement mount was out. Got some giant 2.85- 3 in washers and then a polyurethane roll at McMaster Carr and cut off about 1.5in thick pieces to use as bushings above and below the frame. I tried a hockey puck (official puck from czech republic btw 8-[ ) but it was way too hard and got vibration noise. The polyurethane works good right now as long as it holds up against the elements next winter. I did both sides rear center, and was able to replace the rear backs with normal mounts. Lucky the nut held its place on the back rear. I really didn't feel like cutting a hole through the wheel well to get to it. Rust throws in a whole new challenge on repairing these old boats. Took it on the highway and ran it up to 85mph with no shimmy. Replace all the sf mounts if you get the death shake.

I dont think I took pics, but this spring/summer I'm going to replace the rack and sway bar. I will check/replace the poly pieces and pucks to make sure they hold up. The poly was not rated for elements but all seems ok. I should get some good pics. I did go back to the heavier softer practice hockey puck on one side of the sf because the poly on both side was too soft and the frame would shift/pop when cornering fast and hard. Solid now but slight vibration at low idle. I got a really nice used sf but not sure I want to put it in this car unless I find another. Amazing that this car is still taking all these crap IL roads and rough RR tracks. Still solid riding. Still good fun vs. all these $30k cars and trucks on the road. No car payments is sweet on the pocket money.
