Dual Mode Mufflers?

Post by redzmonte »

What do you guys think, I came across a set of Camaro ZL1 Dual mode mufflers and thinking about trying them in place of my stock mufflers (installing Dual mode switch) If you flip them opposite sides the line up a little bit like stock... Obviously they will need to be modified a little to work.

I have only seen others use cutouts connected up near the downpipe for all of their exhaust switching needs.

I am also concerned with the end result, as ultimately the soundtrack will be much different than that of a dual exhaust LS V8 (the term barfing giraffe comes to mind), and it is often an uphill battle to get something that sounds anywhere near palatable.

Guess what I am concerned about, is that even if you invested all of the effort to get it working, you would hit it and be disappointed with the results.

Am I seeing this right? Are those vacuum driven actuators?

A lot of dual mode exhausts are vacuum powered.

If the rest of your exhaust is stock, I don't anticipate the car getting too much louder with the baffles open. The stock resonator and cat on a 2000+ quiet it down most of the way.

They are Vac operated. Which is easy enough, the corvette companies have a vac switch for the C6 to add the vac operation on a car without the dual mode system that can be used or you can make one for like $20 with some vac line and a Solenoid. I can replace or remove the Resonator if it is too quiet. Those mufflers are surprisingly heavy.
On a side note, We have a 08 DTS at work and the exhaust is basically the same but it has a larger mid pipe/Y pipe and resonator... It looks to be same specs as the later (03+ iirc) SSEI's.. Might have to see if i can find a used midpipe/Y pipe locally and swap.

pretty close in shape in orientation...

If they are truly vacuum actuated, and there is no electrics going to them, you should be ok. I know the latest bi-modes (like used on the SS), can be controlled through the infotainment system IIRC, which means there is electronics running it. So those one would want to steer away from.

Those might actually sound ok since the mufflers are so small. There isn't a lot there to absorb sound to begin with. :)

I might do a electronic vac switch Like the "NPP IN A BOX" or make my own (Simple to install) not sure yet. I guess i could use a vac system that will close under Vac and open under boost...

They are installed without the vac.. Sounds good. Deep and mellow, not to loud and quiet on the highway. Dual 2" stainless Y into 2.25" Vbands on the mufflers.
