Gas Mileage

Post by beachbum »

I noticed on the wife's 2000 SSEi that the gas mileage has been dropping. No trouble codes or other performance issues. The car has approx. 87,000 original miles on it and I replaced the plugs and wires a year ago (NGK plugs and Belden wires). Any ideas on what else to check? The car still has the original O2 sensor and the PCV valve was OK when I changed the LIM gasket a year ago. Maybe it's time to replace both of them but I wanted to check with our resident experts to see if there are any additional ideas or items I need to check/replace. :helpsmilie:

Replacing the front O2 sensor would be a good place to start. It's likely getting a little tired at that mileage. Air filter replacement, as well as MAF and throttle body cleaning could be added to the list.

To get better miles to the gallon in Florida we would Try finding regular gasoline with no Ethanol in it. My 2003 with 120k lost 15% miles per gallon when the first tank of 10% ethanol was forced into our fuel by the State of Florida. So now in Florida we get less miles to the gallon. I had 31-32 at 75 mph and now I am down to 27-28. The performance seems the same, my O2 sensors test out fine, I just have to stop more often. The city street driving in Miami also went from 21 down to 17 - 18. I used to go from South Dade (Miami) to Valdosta Georgia on the expressways with 16 gallons, now I can't make it out of Florida with 17 gallons. Thank you Gov. Charlie Crist
I am thinking about going Hydrogen.

Do you know if Murrays or Auto Zone sell PCV valve for a 00ssei. Is there another name for it. I also want to know how much is a O2 Sensor and where can i buy that as well. and how much it cost for a mechanic to put them on. THanks. I know these might be very easy things but I dont know them so please give me the answer to them with no brag.

Murrays and Autozone both sell the PCV.

I would think that if you're paying more than $60 for a mechanic to change your front O2 sensor, then you're paying too much.

Only get AC Delco O2 sensors. The best prices can be found at gmpartsdirect.com

Part of the reason fuel mileage is dropping could be the fuel. Are you running Premium every tank? Ethanol in the fuel can cause that, but the main reason is prices. The oil companies are making fuel of lower quality in order to keep the price down. Current fuel only lasts about 3 months as of late. If you store your car in the winter, or if you have a boat, motorcycle, ATV, etc., then you MUST add a fuel stabilizer, like Sta-Bil, otherwise next spring you will have a lot of fun cleaning fuel tanks and Carbs. Just my $.02

Check the air pressure in the tires too... I have a slow leak (...the tire, not me) and if I don't keep the pressure up, I will loose 2-4 mpg .
