HVAC regulators /actuators

Post by kheflw »

I'm tearing into my 05 GXP this weekend to install a new aftermarket head unit. I've pulled some nice directions on pulling off the dash and in some of the them they show you need to take off the dash all the way from instrument panel to above the glove box.

So anyway, I will work my way through the stereo install, but I want to ask about where the HVAC actuators are or whatever you call the things that break that dont allow the air to flow into the car. I have that problem. I think it's multiple units.

While I have this thing apart, is there anything I can do to look at them, and think about fixing it?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

These are really something you want to replace. There isn't a good way to service them and make them reliable for a long period. They'd probably be okay for a while with disassembly, cleaning with the right agents and lubricating properly, but with the amount of work one or two can be, I would be looking at new.

There are four of them in your car. A mode and temperature blend actuator on the left side and the recirculation and another temperature blend actuator on the right.

Space can be tight. The mode actuator on the left is a treat because of it's physical size. Also, to get it out, you need to first remove the temperature blend actuator (closest to the firewall) on that same side. The mode actuator is the one closest to the shift level.

Your problem may be related to wiring, a controller or even a physical obstruction. An actuator would not be far down my list of suspects though. Does the fan run well and without noise?. As a matter of formality, you may want to open the cover in the engine compartment cowl and look to see if there's any accumulation of debris down near the fan. You could also remove the fan motor and look up to make sure nothing is blocking the recirc door (that half-moon shaped piece in the photo below).

This is the recirc actuator at the rear. The motor control module is in the forefront.

I have a video clip of the recirc door operating, however it's on a media card in an inspection camera loaned to a friend and don't have immediate access to it.

Wow thanks! Good info. Looks like a serious job pulling the interior apart to get in there. I've got what I need off now for the Stereo install, and looks like I'm not even close.
Do you have any links for the correct replacement parts?
If I brought this in to a place to get done, any idea on cost?

I'll try what you said first. BTW, yes the Fan runs perfectly, in all speeds and modes. When I bought the car about 5 months ago, I had it inspected and the guy pulled all of the codes and told me about the Actuators being defective. Car is perfect otherwise, so I bought it.

The heat seems to work better than the AC. I've had all of the systems checked and the AC is working fine from the engine side. The Passenger side sends out some cold air but not much, Drivers side nothing.

Thanks, I think I will have to bite the bullet and bring it in. What kind of place would you or anyone suggest?
