Fuel Range on DIC

Post by PhoenixStar »

I had my 05 GXP sitting for 3 weeks at the mechanic, and I noticed after I picked it up that the fuel range seems to read about 200 miles less than what it should be. I just filled it up and the range is at about 200 miles when it should be around 400 as it is normally after a fill up. Did a sensor gunk up after sitting? Or is something coincidentally broken on the fuel pump? My vehicle has 101k on it. Thanks[*

The car does the math continuously and updates the range based on recent mpg readings during each ignition cycle. So...with it in the shop for 3 weeks the car may have been idling or moving around the lot therefore recording near 0mpg so its normal for the range to go from 400 miles down to 200.

The fuel range is calculated based on your fuel economy over the last 20 miles if I remember correctly. If the car idled for a long period of time, the range will drop a lot, and if you drive it on the open road for a bit it'll creep back up.

Ahh that would make sense. My mechanic did say he had it in idle for 30 mins to monitor it, and since my last drive of 60 miles the ranged had improved drastically, about 2/3 closer to where it should be. Ironically, at the time of this writing, my oil pressure gauge also just pinned itself at 120 for the first time ever, I'm guessing it's probably the common stepper failures since it even barely swipes a 1/16" when the ignition goes off and on. Seems 100k really is the magic mileage number when things start to need attention. Wasn't there someone on this site who repairs gauge clusters?
