Let's fix the ABS and traction control on my 95 SSEi

Post by focusmaniaczx3 »

The abs and tc quit on me a few months back and I finally have time to start tackling it. Both abs and tc lights are on in the dash and the tc button in the center console doesn't appear to do anything. How should I go about diagnosing the problem? It's a 95 so I can't just plug an obd2 reader to it. Stupid obd1.5.... I also don't want to just start blindly replacing parts cause that could get expensive real fast. So.... Any tips or words from the wise?
the focus was my first car so obviously it has become my money pit and 580whp play toy.
i bought a kia soul to "grow up" and have something that is practical with a back seat and gets good mileage.
my wife brought the ssei bonneville into the mix to piss me off because it does everything the kia does better.
i then bought another ssei bonneville

Find an obd 1.5 scanner, I think (can't recall) it will scan ABS codes. Most likely it's a wheel speed sensor that's bad, which requires replacing the wheel bearing hub.

I have a scantron tool for obd1 cars with cartridges and plugs for gm and Ford and a few others. I seem to remember reading at one time you can splice a obd2 plug on a cord for those and it will work on a 95. Is there anyone who can verify that? I'll look for a obd1.5 scan tool in the mean time.

If the car has an Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM), they can go bad and take out ABS, Traction Control, and Magnasteer if you have that. They were all out on my wife's 2001 Grand Prix GT. I yanked an EBCM off another 2001 in a salvage yard, swapped it in, and it fixed all three systems.

Edit: according to Google, on 94-95, it looks like this, mounted to the left strut tower:

There are places you can send it to to have it rebuilt (google Cheap ABS), or if you're good with electronics you can crack it open and rebuild it yourself. Common capacitors go bad and the boards need resoldering. You just replace the major capacitors and resolder the board.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for on of those if I hit a local pull apart before I get this sorted.

I found this in a search. So it's been done but wiring stuff up like that isn't really my strength. Any chance somebody can spell out how this works for dumb guys like me?
