Need new struts - any suggestions?

Post by 1963Vetteguy »

Hi Gang,
Need to replace struts/mounts in my 00 SSEI and would like to restore factory ride. That is to say I don't want the stiffness that would come with performance replacements. I know I can get everything from the dealer but just wondering if anybody has found aftermarket that might be better without changing the ride characteristics. Please let me know if you have any thoughts on this. Thanks so much for all you guys do.

Realistically, to restore factory ride, buy the OE ACDelco struts (NOT ACDelco professional).
The OE struts often hold up better over time than aftermarket.
Cheapest price is probably at Rockauto, using the Pontiac Bonneville Club discount code in their Vendor's forum post.

Some people have tried other brands with mixed reviews.

Just put on Unity 11360 from rock auto and it drives nice 61.79 and have a 5% off code if you need it. How much is forum discount? wish I had found out about that sooner lol.

I'd recommend the KYBs. They feel a little stiffer than my OEM FE2 (which is what you have in your SSEi), but that is likely since mine were worn.

I used monroe quick struts on my 03 and have them on about 5 yrs and 50k, rides nice and still going strong, I know people will tell you the ride height is a problem, but after a few months it goes back to normal, on an 2000 bonne, I recommend to go with these, good price and easy job

The ride height is way off, Monroe knows this is a problem and no longer lists the quick strut as a part number available for the 2000+ Bonneville. Search other parts stores and websites all you want and they will list them as a suitable application but go to the actual Monroe website and you will see for yourself that they are no longer recommended.
