blue devil

Post by unclebubbaSE »

Hello...anyone have any experience with using the Blue Devil engine oil stop leak products?. My '04 SE seems to have a pesky slow leak on the garage floor eventhough my oil pan gasket and rod bearings were recently replaced. It seems now that the rear main seal may be the culprit. I've seen that they make a specific rear main sealer, and an "all in one" oil stop leak product. I'm running mobil 1 HM 5w30 syn. now, but may switch to 10w30 and/or dino oil next change (in another 2k miles). Their products seem to have pretty decent reviews from what I've seen on the web.

Any suggestions or comments?.
Thank you!.

Apparently not - 37+ views and no replies. Looks like a great opportunity for you to break new ground on the forum.

I have used the Blue Devil Rear Main Seal on my 1975 Monte Carlo.
It really seemed to work.
I had the rear main seal replaced and it still leaked pretty good.
The problem is that the old seal cut a groove in the crank shaft and it still leaked after replacement.
I didn't want to take the crank out and have it welded and reground so I tried the Blue Devil.
I went from about a 3 inch diameter leak to about a quarter size leak.
The stuff does work pretty good.
I also used it on my 2001 Bonneville SLE and small leak went away.
I would definitely use it again.

Yea, thanks guys...it was getting kind of lonely out here!. Just got through reading email response from blue devil 'tech', and he recommended using their "all in one"/ multiple symptom oil leak sealer if I wasn't positive it was the crank seal that was leaking. V/C gaskets are good and O/P gasket was recently replaced as previously posted. Really don't see what else it could be...I think I'm going to stick with the specific rear main formula and give it a shot. Don't want to "treat" other gaskets if no current problems are present. Dropping the trans to replace a $20.00 oil seal is financially unfeasible to say the least. Supposed to see results in 80 to 100 mi. of driving.

Thanks again...I hope to be posting positive results soon.

As the designated Blue Devil guinea pig, be sure to post your results - good, bad, or indifferent - so we have a data point for future reference.

:bcoffee: Anxiously awaiting the report.

Well, I guess it's up to me to take the plunge. I was hoping the "high mileage" Mobil 1 would help somewhat, but to be honest I've only been running it for about 1k miles so far. Maybe I'll just monitor the leak for the duration (at least another 3 to 4k miles), and then add it the next oil change if nothing improves, we'll see.
The leak does not seem to be getting worse so far. :dontknow:

Sorry...its been a while since updating post, but I did finally add the Blue Devil "oil stop leak" (not the specific rear main formula) to the crankcase and the stuff seems legit!. After approx. 100 mi. of driving so far, the typical oil burning smell when hot, and the drops on the garage floor have definitely diminished. I would recommend it to anyone dealing with a small but annoying engine oil leak. Spending $20.00 on a bottle of Blue Devil compared to having to drop the trans. to replace a rear main seal seems to have worked out for me at least. Will probably go to back to syn. blend HM at next oil change. It's supposed to be a one shot deal without having to add at every oil change, we'll see...so far, so good!.
