Trac off/ no ABS lights

Post by jddem »

2001 SSEi - 68000 miles

Began to hear a humming when driving , determined it was a wheel bearing issue.
Took to garage (established relationship, trust the guy 10+ years).
Replaced both front wheel bearings with some brand that was on sale.

First rain , began getting the dinging and the trac off light and the no ABS lights would come on and stay on (even after restart).
Mechanic replaced front passenger bearing (which threw code).

2 weeks later, same dash lights, mechanic ran code, it was driver's side. He checked the plug (ABS plug is part of unit) reset code. I continued to use, light went off again, passenger side. (light going off was triggered by manhole cover).
At this point, we replace both bearings with NEW BRAND
Timkin-MOOG on both sides, figuring it might be the cheaper/ sale bearings.

Fast forward 2 weeks,
i and driving along, hit some bumpy patch on road, and the Trac off light and ABS off light comes on.
it resets when i shut down and restart car but prior to ever touching the bearing s I never saw this light.
it has happened 2X with the Timkin parts.

What could be setting it off?

Mechanic and I are at a loss for where to look.

Currently with the new bearings rain has not been a factor.
The only constant has been bumpy road patch that sets off lights and they stay on until I restart car.

Now keep in mind I have hit bumpy patches where the proper low trac light will come on then go back out.

Thank you for reply

Is the Brake light also coming on at the same time as the Traction Off and ABS lights?
If so, then there is info about that problem in the 2000+ common problems and solutions sticky post.

Your mechanic is going to have to carefully check the wiring.
If your car stores a code for a particular wheel, at least that will give your mechanic a hint as to which wiring to inspect.
It could be anything from a pin that's loose in the connector to a worn spot in the insulation.
If I was your mechanic, I'd also try to get the warning lights to come on by jiggling the wires at various points.

So
we examined the wires and the look good.
The code is constantly originating from RIGHT FRONT WHEEL
we cannot seem to duplicate the error, it just happens at will.
when it does the ABS kick on for a sec.

the only dash lights are TRAC OFF/ ABS OFF , and the light goes OUT on the traction control button on the console next to shifter and cannot be turned back on.

When i restart car, everything goes back to normal.

sounds like a bad sensor, my dads lesaber had a brand new wheel bearing fail sensor wise and just left it unplugged since it kept setting off the abs

Could be another faulty sensor in the new hub, I wouldn't rule it out. I would also check your rear hubs for any play, as I had one that caused the light to come on over pot holes. Were you ever able to scan the car while the lights were lit on the dash?

replaced hub AGAIN. still no change.

To recap here is what is happening:
while driving I will apply the brakes (this can happen at any given time, I have actually gone days without this happening, and I have had it happen 20+ times in one day)
"LOW TRAC" warning and the anti lock brakes will kick in, then usually on the next bump (no matter how minor) will set off the dinging, and the TRAC OFF and ABS lights will come on and stay on until I restart the car.

My mechanic has basically thrown in the towel at this point. He is out of ideas.
2001 SSEi Bonneville - 69,000 miles

What we have done:
replaced both front hubs.
both outer tie rods have been replaced
4 wheel alignment
visual examination of wires, no corrosion seen

Can someone tell me what sensors are in the loop with the Wheel hub sensor?
maybe changing the other sensors will solve problem (depending on cost)

I believe the system consists of the wheel speed sensors and the EBCM on the ABS pump itself. But I may be wrong.

I would still consider raising the back of the vehicle and checking the rear hubs. I thought that my replacement Moog front bearing was the cause of my ABS/TRAC lights over bumps. Turned out to be a rear hub that was the issue. Glad I didn't replace the front.

One thing i need to stress, 99% of the time, the light coming on is preceded by the ABS kicking in when i apply brakes and the LOW trac loght coming on.

Grab the wheel at 12 and 6 and give it a wiggle. If it has any play, the hub is bad. Never hurts to try, but given your code.. I'd almost look at the wires again. Maybe Andrew will see this and chime in. Very interesting phantom problem.

When we had car on lift, I looked at wires and peeled back a bit and saw no corrosion. My mechanic confirmed (he is willing to entertain anything at this point, he already replaced numerous bearings for free at this point). I just don't have endless cash to dump. Upsets me considering what has already been spent and given the low miles.

I did some off site surfing and saw some posts regarding grand ams and grand prixs of 99-01 era with similar issues yet no resolution.
1 guy did mention a MAP sensor was replaced and that solved his issue, another said replacing a bearing solved issue for only a few months.

BTW thanks for all the replies thus far, I feel lost in a waste land on this.

I suggested replacing this part, my mechanic said that my car doesn't have plugs at both ends, rather mine is wired directly into the main harness.
can someone confirm? why would they sell this part?
