Passenger window jamming when going up

Post by Toby Hanson »

Hello everyone,

I'm finding more little issues with my 2000 SSEi as I drive it. I've discovered that the front passenger window jams going up. It goes down just fine but when I put it up it wants to tip forward and jam in the track. If I grab the window glass at the top and pull it toward the rear of the car the window will continue going up just fine. I think the previous owner knew about this problem because there's duct tape residue over the window switch on the passenger arm rest. I looked around the forum and didn't find anything that described this problem. I also took the door panel off and looked at the regulator and it seems to be working properly. Anybody have any idea what may be going on here?

Sounds like a problem with one or both of the brackets that hold the window glass.
Make sure the bolts are tight.
Torque on the bolts is 95 INCH pounds.
I would also make sure the track is clean and a bit of silicone spray in the track will help it move more smoothly.

I started out with the easy things like checking the window being in the front and rear tracks. It's in the tracks and I couldn't find any obstructions in either track that should cause it to bind up. I also sprayed a little bit of lube in each track but that didn't seem to help any. The bolts that hold the glass to the regulator trolley weren't as tight as they should be. I tightened them each to 95 inch pounds which helped just a little bit. The problem seems to be that the plastic trolley that rides in the window regulator track moves back and forth. I made three short videos that shows what's going on:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlzPXf1G2_Y

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gof9GiaV-Q8

The first video shows the window going up crooked and me pulling back on the glass to get it back on track. The second video shows the front of the glass carrier. The glass doesn't seem to be moving separate from the carrier. The third video shows the regulator trolley rocking back and forth on the regulator track. Take a look at the videos and let me know what you think is going on.

According to the last video, your window regulator is shot. It shouldn't have that much slop in it. I have good ones if you need another.

hi, that white piece of reg needs to have tension forcing it to the guide on the left- the lifting part is off centre so the glass must ride in the groove - too much play from whitey lifts at an angle and kaput.

I see a bolt holding the centre lift to whitey, see if you can adjust the hole left to force whit piece to its place

thats what i see from 3 vid

That was my suspicion once I saw it wiggling around but I don't have any experience with this style of regulator so I didn't want to diagnose it as such without more experienced opinions.

Since I've got the door apart I'm going to check and see if I can get a regulator locally. If not, I'll take you up on your offer.

Hi everyone!

I put the new regulator assembly in the car today which allowed me to take a look at the old one. The plastic trolley that rides on the regulator track was broken on the inside which is why it was going up crooked. With the replacement regulator from Andrew the window operates properly as it should. In case anyone has a similar problem in the future, here's the solution.

It's nice that you posted back with the results. It always helps others when you do that.
Just so you're aware, the black goo on the door liner needs to be resealed to the liner and the door after you do anything inside the door.
If you don't reseal it, then water leaks into the car and soaks the underside of your carpet.
The carpet has thick foam backing, so you won't notice it if you don't look---until mold starts growing.

I've done door repairs before so I'm familiar with the water barrier. I appreciate the reminder, though. It's really useful for future people who may be looking for this solution.
