Transmission

Post by kennedyrec »

Well, the trans on my 01 SLE is on its way out. I dumped a bottle of Lucas tranny magic in and it drives but its last legs are wobbly after 202,000 original miles. Just looking for some input on options, although this might be the end of the ride and possibly my last Bonneville. I have owned 10 of these since my 1993 SLE purchased new. Many were handed down to extended family and each run to over 200k; most only died after being involved in accidents so its been a great run.

As a side note, I bought the above car wrecked in 2009 and posted this thread about the trans taking a pretty good hit in the accident. I ended up changing the diff housing and fluid and it ran 75,000 miles until now. This was my old post:

So, here I am with a 200k car that needs struts, mounts, tires, a battery soon, a transmission, and is starting to pinhole under the fuel tank door. Considered a $500 jy trans but dont have a yard I trust (i do my own work and dont want to do it twice), and interchange is year specific to 2001-2002. I talked to the guys at Triple Edge on a reman, not sure that makes financial sense @ appx $1500.

I have looked for a 04-05 but the majority of whats out there for sale is junk. What do you guys think, is it time to move on??

I think that is up to you as for getting rid of it. Not sure if you want this type of help, but I recently sold my Grand Am which I used to love, so I can give some tips if you want.

Things to take into account: how much do you like or love your car? How much do you crave a change? Is it costing too much to repair and keep running? What condition is it in, both body wise and mechanically wise? Are you ready to part with it? Have your driving needs changed to where you need a bigger or smaller vehicle?

Those are just a few things I asked myself when I sold the Grand Am. It was in ok shape body wise, but it had paint problems, trans problems, starting problems, computer problems, and various other gremlins. But again, it really comes down to what you think.
