2000 Bonneville

Post by lawenforcer »

Hello. I am hoping to find someone that has had the same issue I am currently having with my 2000 Bonneville. Occasionally I start it up and it doesn't seem to want to go, like it cutting out... Then I go a half mile or so and it will quit and not act up anymore. It doesn't do it all the time. Maybe a couple times a week. The check engine will come on and blink while it's doing it then it just goes solid. I got my buddies code reader and it has one code after it done this, P0302, which i believe it is a misfire..its just confusing cause it only does it on occasion and never does it going down the road etc...only periodacally when i first start the car and start driving and then it quits...does anyone have any experience with this? I am really wanting to fix it so it don't get worse. Thanks for the help....

That code is for a misfire on cylinder two. I would start with inspecting/replacing the coil, wire, and plug for that cylinder. My money is on the coil.

Stupid question time. #-o Which coil is cylinder 2 so I can know I'm looking/replacing the correct one. Is it common for a misfire such as this one to be such a periodic thing. I replaced the plugs with new ones and I got a used coil packs and board off my nephews 3800 that he wasn't using. Which doesn't mean it doesn't have the cylinder 2 coil pack bad on it. Just want to put all the info out there...

This shows the layout of the coils, wires, and cylinders. It's shows the supercharged engine, but the layout is the same for the naturally aspirated.

Plugs and wires have been known to be bad out of the box. If the coils aren't marked with the cylinder numbers, they're aftermarket coils which can be iffy.

For a more intermittent miss like this I would suspect the plug wire. They move around and if they are bad they can arc through the insulation causing a random misfire.
