2001 Bonneville SSEI New User, NEED HELP

Post by Abelquist »

My Step mom gave me her '01 SSEI for 500$ fully loaded with all the options, including the cyclone rims, but there's 2700$ worth of parts i need to put into it. Right now the car won't start, battery is brand new, alternator is good, have't gotten the starter checked yet, but my dad thinks it's the relay, and not the starter itself. I really love this car, but I need to get it running, and getting it started is where i need to start with this car.

I don't know how much you know about the car, so sorry if I over simplify. There are two sets of fuses/relays. One set under the hood and one set under the back seat. The covers tell you what's what. I assume that it's not turning over at all. Check fuses and relays that pertain to that. To check the starter without taking it off, run one side of a jumper cable from the battery to the post of the starter where the heavy wire is connected.
There's lots of help on this site. In your subject line, be specific about the problem and you'll get more responses. Keep posting, we would love to help you out.

Always great to have the younger crowd join us. Most of the newer members are. Oldman has good advice, be more specific, post needed help in the proper section, and we'd love to have you post photos of your Bonneville too. Can't wait for you to have your Bonneville running. Hopefully it won't need $2700 in parts. - BC

I had a problem with the '92 SSE a number of years ago not cranking. Wound up being several different things. 1) battery (you replaced yours), 2)battery cables, 3)battery cable bolts/spacers at the battery. Along the way I replaced the starter switch (wasn't needed) and starter (wasn't needed). Do the best you can to isolate the problem before you start replacing parts. When you do start replacing parts, start with the least costly first. - BC

Start by checking/tightening all connections

By "not starting" do you have a No crank, No start?

Welcome.

Depending on if it cranks or not, it could also be a crank position sensor.

The car does not crank at all. Even if I try to jump it, the car still won't turn over. I switched out all the relays that pertain to the starting of the car and that had no effect, but now I have new relays.. And the battery as I previously stated is brand new (It's a Duralast Gold). I haven't been home to test the startee yet, but as soon as I test the connections and figure out the problem, I'll let you all know what I find out, as well as try to get some pictures up here soon!
