Full paint alternatives

Post by Bumzag »

So when I bought my Bonnie, there was and still is a considerable amount of oxidation of the paint. I linked my gallery that has a few pics of the car.
My question is, are there any alternatives to a full blown paint job? I'm by no means looking for show room quality, just to get rid of the obvious white marks. I'm hoping to do it myself and willing to buy any necessary equipment so any ideas will help. Would wet sanding and then waxing/polishing make it look any better? I know in doing so the color won't be uniform but won't be as rough and noticeable, at least that's the goal.

I figured this would be a response. Should have mentioned that I am considering it. Any chance you might have insight into what a full job would cost? I know it depends on who does it but if you had to guess?

You can dip your whole car in your driveway by yourself for under $400.

Or are you asking about a full respray? Easy would cost more than the vehicle is worth, a very poor investment.

What do you mean full respray? As in a full professional respray? Cause yeah, most definitely worth more than the car. I've gotten a few estimates that haven't been less than $3k. And $400 is looking pretty *dang* nice..

I agree with plastidip. They are doing some crazy things with it right now, give their forum a look and do some research on it, done right it looks good, but take the time and do it right including prep work or it will look no better then it does right now. Don't even bother trying to do the whole car with rattle cans either unless you want nasty zebra stripes everywhere.

My paint is oxidized to the point where the white splotches are uneven with the rest, so it's fairly rough, almost like sand paper. Gonna check in with their forums to see if I'd have to fully sand the car beforehand.

You have massive clear coat failure, sadly a fairly common problem for many of our cars in the 90s. You will in the very least want to wash it with a strong APC or citrus cleaner to clean any loose oxidation up that normal wash won't get. Sanding at least the edges of the failed peeling clear coat will likely help with adhesion as well any the overall finished look of the dip.

I say dip it. They have a video on youtube where they did an oxidized civic I believe. It came out pretty good. I've thought of dipping my car just to protect the paint as mine is still pretty pristine.

There are actually a few places locally that plasti-dip cars so if labor isn't too much, I'll have it done properly. Just need to find a new rear driver door.. someone backed into my car >.<

Plastidip is a good option but it will just temporarily solve your problem. Painting your car is your best bet.

Temporary is okay with me. Besides, it's a 94. At best it's worth $1000 given its cosmetic condition. I'm not spending 4x that on a paint job when I'll most likely have found a new DD by the time the plast-dip peels.

hi, you can sand prep yourself and call maco or some company like it for a nice finish--I have seen them advertise for 250 bones-- not the best paint job but you get whay you pay for.

I painted my 93 cutlass after bodywork with 16 spraycans and from 30 feet, It looked nice( even got compliments from a painter!!)- not bad up close but you could tell it was budget job- total cost was 180 bucks- but I went from turquoise to white so used more cans than if I went darker colour

Maaco you mean? Looks like there's a branch about 110 miles out. Anyone dealt with them before?

I've never dealt with them before, but I have seen how bad their work is. I'm sure there are a few out there that do good work though. It helps if you know somebody, but even then it can get expensive depending on what color paint you choose.

If you aren't keeping the car more than a few more years, plasti dip is a good option. It will last at least three years as long as you don't drive in environments that chip paint easily, like gravel roads and whatnot.

Thanks for the input. The cheap paint job is enticing, but it seems like all they've done is franchise auto painting at the expense of quality. Plasti-dip is looking mighty friendly right about now.
