front right wheel area

Post by pete25 »

When driving once I get to about 35mph-45mph a rotating noise kicks in and you can hear it fairly well. Once you get above 45 you don't hear it until about 65 and then it is much higher pitched and you can obviously hear it rotating faster. I was wondering if it is anything serious. I'm just thinking it is some dust somewhere and I plan it getting a good wash monday or tuesday.

Wheel bearing are fairly common issues with our years. How is it when you turn? Is it a chirping noise? How old are you brake pads?

sounds like a wheel bearing, take it to a mechanic and he'll be able to tell you right away. If the noise disappears when you turn, it's definitely the wheel bearing. Fix now not later.

Goes away when I turn. I just had a bunch of stuff changed when I got my tires changed. Including brakes, 90% sure that wheel bearings were one of them. I'll get it taken care of soon then.

These run a sealed bearing that requires a hub change. So, if they told you they greased the wheel bearings, they lied.

Well it wasn't a quick fix at a questionable place. The place it was at I trust to do a great job and know what they are doing. I'll prolly take it back there and have them look at it.

What Matt said is absolutely true. All FWD bonnevilles from 87-05 use a sealed bearing that is impossible to lube.

Jack up that corner of the car and wobble the wheel with your hands at 12 and 6 o'clock. Do the same at 3 and 9 o'clock. How much wobble and play is there? Now compare it to the other side.

One of the things that I have found with the 2000+ Bonnevilles is that it can be hard to pinpoint which hub is making the noise if that is the only symptom. By doing the turn test, it seemed the left front hub was bad on my friend's car. No looseness in the hub, no vibration felt while turning the tire, etc. Replaced it, and nope....the noise was still there. So, either both hubs were bad, or the wrong one was replaced. Your shop could be running into the same problem.

Found out for sure that my shop replaced all four brakes and both front hubs. Went for a ride with my dad and he said considering all that new stuff he finds it hard to believe that it would be that. Plus when making turns either way the noise isn't really affected. He thought it might be the tire but we're gonna take it into the shop within in a few days to check. The best way i've found to describe the sound at about 35-45mph is a "whomp, whomp, whomp, whomp" that is rotating and seems to almost certainly be coming from the front passenger wheel area.

Well, an expert mechanic test drove it and did a thorough inspection and couldn't find anything mechanically wrong with my car with any thing that may make that sound.
