Head Gasket Tightening

Post by Typanis »

Blew the head gasket between cylinders 2 & 4. In process of putting everything back together, but I want to clarify what I need to do to do the job correctly.
I know I need to use new bolts and I know the torque sequence.
But what I need to know is what do I torque them to and how do I do the tightening?
Im used to doing this in older cars and tightening them in 3 increments to the final torque, but I'm not fully sure of what to do with these torque to yield bolts.

Thanks!

Tighten down to these specs and in this sequence.

50 N-m + 120° or 37 lb ft + 120°

===Intake===
5 1 3 6 <---Shorter Bolts
7 4 2 8 <---Longer Bolts
===Exhaust===

Are you using new bolts? IIRC they are yeald to torque bolts and should only be used once.. Also if you dont have a Degree wheel for the 120* you can also put a paint line on the top of the bolt as a reference and get it close.

Yes, I'm using new bolts. Should I tighten each bolt in sequence to the full torque, or tighten them incrementally in a couple of steps in sequence? For instance tightening all to 38 ft/lbs then 60 degrees and then another 60 degrees?

From what I've read, you can go either way. If it were me, I would do half first, and then go and redo them all to full spec.
