PS Pump Replacement

Post by 1964 Bonneville Ragtop »

Anyone have or know of a step by step tutorial, on the R&R of a Power Steering pump on a 1996 Bonneville SE?

i am pretty sure that would be in the Chilton manual and I KNOW its in your car's FSM (Field Service Manual). It's the dealership repair manual specific to your car. Its indispensable.

The procedure for removing the pump is pretty straight forward without
using any manuals. I believe I had to go through the wheel well on my 95.
The pulley is pressed on the pump shaft and I believe it must be transferred
to the new pump. Ask the parts store about that, and ask if they will do
the transfer for you - that's what I did.

Bleeding the system takes some time and effort. Do a search on the
forum and find the procedure.

This might help to an extent. The only thing is the 1996 SE will have an engine mount sort of in the way of the belt path.

according to my Chilton step 1: is disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, step 2: remove the pump drive belt, step 3: remove the pump mounting bolts and disattach the pump from the engine, step 4: detach the return line from the pump and drain the fluid in the line step 5: is disconnect the pressure line from the pump and then of course put it back together in reverse.

It's a simple, straightforward job if you jack up the car and take the passenger wheel off. Then you have access and can see what you're doing. Two long bolts, lines, a pulley swap, and bleed it afterwards with the car still jacked up. The power steering pump pulley tool is available for rental at most parts stores.
