headlight assembly removal

Post by WoodyBalto »

I have been searching on here for the past hr and cant find the answer so i have to ask.

How the hell do you get these buggers off?
I removed the 2 10 mil bolts and the assembly is loose but wont pull out of the fender. I know i read on here in the past that you might need to pull real hard but i was pulling so hard i am worried about breaking something. :btruestory:
Once loose i should just pull straight towards the front of the car right? is there a safe place to pry from without causing damage?

Thanks for the help and the link.
My lights are shot. they have tiny cracks in some spots.i have wet sanded and polished them in the pasts (while on car) and they clean up well (become transparent again) but no way to sand out cracks..lol
i'm removing them to experiment with tinting the amber reflector and the chrome. (not gonna go too dark on the chrome cuz i know it will reduce my light output).

I think dark lights look better on light (white) cars. Future plans include a mild tint on the windows and tinting the tails as well (not too dark don't wanna get attention from THE MAN, just darken that ugly orange back there). Image

I would NOT tint the chrome. That will greatly affect light output.

I would just clear the amber out. Do a search for clearing corners.

Personally I love the amber, have amber bulbs in also. I do not like the look of the cleared corners.

ok,, after lots or prying, pulling and muscling i got the passengers side off but the only thing i have accomplished on the drivers side is to break the housing where right bolt attaches (thank god for JB Weld). That MFer don't wanna budge. i just sprayed some PB Blast back in there, gonna take another whack at it in an hr or so.
Can someone tell me if that ball socket is accessible my removing the inner wheel liner? If so, how time consuming would that be?

thanks again

It's not accessible from the inner fender, you'd have to REMOVE the fender to get at it. Put some tape on there and pry it out. Both my headlights have the ball socket broken off, it hasn't affected anything so far...
Bye Bye:

I have one broken ball socket too, never noticed a difference... that was the MF'er that was holding the headlight in really good the first time.

Mission accomplished i used a plastic bondo spreader to protect the paint on the fender and pryed with a flat headed screwdriver while someone else pulled. :btruestory:

ps: it's the housing that broke (the plastic ear with the metal clip that the actual bolt goes through)

After removing the two bolts I pulled the assembly out a little bit then I took the handle of a craftman screwdriver and placed it between the assembly and frame about an inch behind where the fender comes down to a point. With a gentle push in on the assembly holding on to the screwdriver it popped right out. This was after I had my feet on the front tire yanking and pulling with my whole 225lb body with no luck.

Great info on the ball being a biatch since I'm installing two new headlight assemblies in my '01 this coming week. Has anyone tried packing any type grease in the socket before reinstalling in case another removal was needed? It's really dry as heck out here in the desert so I'm hoping mine aren't so rusty.

You can definitely pack some grease in there to prevent future corrosion.
