metal on metal clanking sound stumped

Post by tpulliam79 »

1994 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi metal-on-metal clinking sound that goes away when I remove the accessory drive belt I have replaced the power steering pump and the tensioner because I thought The noise was coming from them when I listened with a stethoscope. no noise from the pUlleys or the balancer. sounds almost like it's coming from the starter but doesn't make any sense since it goes away when I pulled the belt? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated :banghead:

Confirm the balancer is not to blame by grabbing the belt and try to move it back and forth. If it moves back and forth, like there is play, it's bad.

Any vids? And what conditions does the noise show up under?

+1 on giving the balancer a closer look. Might be cracked.

I'm with them on the harmonic balancer. I can still remember what it sounded like when it finally gave up on us, LOL! - BC

This was a 100% confirmed Harmonic Balancer failure. You can confirm it in your case by moving the drive belt back and forth. Essentially the rubber that connects the outside and inside of the balancer is shot, and will allow the drivebelt side to rotate some before the crank side stops it.

You are a glutton for punishment! Sure hope your wife's should surgery goes well. Mine had her rotator cuff done 5? or 6? years ago. That's is one very tough surgery. Hope your mom's car is okay too. Keep us posted! - BC
