Swapping 3.8L from 01 Grand Prix GT to 03 Bonneville! HELP!

Post by donn188 »

Pulled the motor & trans from my buddies 01 Grand Prix GT from his car before he sent it to the scrap yard & today we came across an 03 Bonneville that still runs & drives but definitely needs a motor. I'm not sure if it's the SE or SLE model but it does have the upgraded sound, cloth seats, no moonroof, 16" aluminum wheels, great tires, only has 175k on it & the guy bought it from his mom at 130k - he parked it when he found water in the coolant.

My question is how hard will this swap be for putting the 01 Grand Prix GT 3.8 into this Bonneville? My dad has been a mechanic his whole life but he thinks the Bonneville's motor mount is in the same place as mine (which is SC) but in a diff place on the GP motor.

Just looking to know as soon as possible how much work will be involved as I would like to make an offer on the car before it's gone - he said first person with cash takes it home.

Any input greatly appreciated!

Easy swap. Everything that is different between the Bonne, and gp will be simple bolt ons.

So anything that would be different between the two would already be on one motor or the other? lol sorry I'm no mechanic :)

I believe it is just a matter of swapping a couple mounts, and the oil pan. I forget the specifics, but if you get the Bonne as a whole, and have the W body long block, you will have what you need to have a running car.

Oil pan, oil pickup, oil filter adapter, rear exhaust manifold, engine mount brackets, ignition coil bracket. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Haro.....I had a bottom end failure on my 02 L67 SSEi last week and have secured a 03 Grand Prix L67 engine. Why does the oil pan need to be changed? Does the Grand Prix steel pan not fit for some reason? :dontknow: Since a connecting rod broke, the pan from my bonnie is no good.
