Bad Random Misfire - No CEL - barely runs

Post by younggunls1 »

Hey everyone, sorry I posted this in the wrong section earlier today..hopefully a Mod can delete it for me and just keep this one.

been a long time since I was last on here but I have an issue that I need help with before I tow the *dang* thing into the dealer as a last resort. Bare with me on this long post but I want to get every detail out there.

Yesterday I was driving to work..car ran perfect no issues at all. Got about 2 miles from work and I noticed the car stutter, or surge if you will, while at a stop light. Get to work and let it idle in the lot for 10 minutes and I could tell there was a misfire as it would skip a beat every once in a while and it seemed to be getting more frequent.

Got off work and drove home..was acting like that again from the get go..made it 5 miles and got on the interstate and when I gave it some pedal to merge it missed really bad so I had to let up. could feel it missing every 10-20 seconds maybe going down the interstate so I pulled into dealer to ask some questions..left there and made it 20 miles home..last couple miles it got bad so I made it there but BARELY

The strange thing is I have not got a Check Engine Light..what the hell

So today I started working on it..used my HP tuners to log misfire data and saw that cylinder 1 was misfiring.. Figured a bad plug, wire, or coil pack. So I checked wires first and that didn't change anything switching them. Started it again and did more logging and now im getting misfires on cylinder 6 as well. next time I run it now I am getting misfires like crazy on 1, 6, and occasionally 3. but NO CEL

So I started by replacing the coil packs...nothing changed..then I changed the Ignition Control Module...No change..so I put the orginal stuff back on and will return those parts. Now after starting the car a few more times and logging, the car has got to the point it stalls out sometimes while idiling, so it will definitely have to be towed if it comes down to it.

I pulled plugs also and they are white chalk like colored almost.. So I have new plugs to put in as well just for tune up purposes.

My next place to check is EGR valve, and Fuel Pressure Regulator..otherwise I am at a total loss of ideas and cant for the life of me figure out why I have no CEL when it is misfiring so bad. Also is it possible I could have wrecked my catalytic converter after having it misfire like this..and could that now cause similar symptoms even if I do find the culprit?

PLEASE any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to have it towed if I can avoid it.

Thanks guys.

White plugs mean running lean. I'd check the MAF and the injectors. Potentially the fuel pump as well.

Well I tried starting it this morning one more time and it just stalls out after about 3-5 seconds of running. I still can not believe there is no Check Engine Light coming on..wtf is going on? A car that is misfiring like crazy, won't idle, and stalls out should be throwing some sort of code..if not multiple codes. This thing is pissing me off beyond belief. Gonna start with the fuel pressure regulator since its only $30..if that's not it then the EGR..if that doesn't fix it I will just put the old on back on and return the new one.

I unhooked the MAF sensor yesterday to see if it changed anything..didn't change a thing..and even having it unhooked it didn't throw a code..which seemed strange, as I thought having a sensor unhooked would for sure cause a code.

I hate throwing parts at a problem without an educated guess at least.

We have no information other than white spark plugs. I would rather see $30 spent on a fuel pressure gauge, and that's assuming you can't get a loaner from Autozone or something.

I am also surprised a parts chain is letting these parts come back after they have been installed.
