project: 2005 GXP (pearl white) - the $800 GXP

Post by harofreak00 »

It's been a while since I started a thread on a project car. I have been continuing to buy, restore and sell Bonnevilles, I just haven't had the time to document all of them on here. However, I thought this one deserved to be shared.

I found this 2005 GXP on craigslist as a guy wanting to sell parts off it. Luckily I got a hold of him before he sold anything off it. I told him I was interested in the whole car and asked how much he wanted. He said $1200 or best offer. I went to go take a look. The car was in Albert Lea, MN, so a pretty good drive for me. The car has a whole list of problems, including: front end damage (bumper cracked, fender paint damage, crappy aftermarket hood, non-GXP headlight), the PS rack failing as the steering gets tight at random times, the oil cooler lines leak pretty bad, the interior is filthy. In fact, the whole car was filthy. The whole car was literally covered in grime. I offered him $800 expecting a counter offer, but he accepted! $800 takes a running and driving GXP. Now I know you are thinking, well aren't the head gaskets blown? Nope. The car has 198k, and he has done a lot of maintenance on it, but never touched the head gaskets because they weren't a problem. Some of the things that were recently replaced: timing chains, water pump, both CV axles and wheel bearings, brakes, tie rods, TPS sensor, IAC sensor, fuel pressure regulator, valve cover gaskets, front coils, catalytic converter, PS pump and the blower motor. To me, it seems like the guy liked to keep his cars maintained, he just didn't care about keeping them looking good.

Anyways, onto the pics. These are before I washed it.

Now, after a quick wash. Ok, not quick at all. I spent most of the afternoon/evening scrubbing this thing.

Now, I'm not sure what to do with this car. With 198k on the Northstar, who knows what's going to happen. I could just drive it as-is until anything happens, and then do another L67 swap, but we don't need another car sitting around. I could do an L67 swap just to sell it to an enthusiast, but with the body damage it would be a hard sell. My best bet would probably be just to restore it as much as I can without dumping too much into it, and just flip it. Any suggestions?

A year or two ago I almost would have just said part it out but lately it seems like demand for much of the stuff has been dwindling down. I know all to well the issues of not needing another car, but honestly I am not sure what I would do with it either if I found one and picked it up like that, it would be a tough call all around, best bet may be though just to clean it up good and put as little into it as possible and flip it. I would think that if the head gaskets haven't went in 200,000 miles they probably have many miles left so I wouldn't be too worried about that.

Nice, i always enjoyed reading your threads and watching your fix these cars up.

Great price on that car, if it was mine i would clean the interior(if you havent already, im assuming you did lol) and as long as it rides nice I'd sell it as is and make a nice profit.

I have the same tires on my GXP wheels too!

If you've done the typical Haro cleaning of the interior, sell it as it is for 1500 or something like that.

You know what REALLY pisses me off... You guys keep finding these GXP's for dirt cheap. :) Well, mainly because I'm exceptionally lazy and don't go actively searching is another part of the issue.

I'll buy it from you for $801.

I wonder if the power steering issue isn't just the control valve on the back of the pump.

I think you could at least triple your money selling it right now after being cleaned up. Looks great

I'd flip it cheap. Awesome job on cleaning it up, too, even in the detail shop that would have been a chore lol!

I can't help you with your dilemma, but I would like say I'm amazed by the cleanup, espcially the exhuast tips!! Scrubbing carbon off exhaust tips is not on the list of car detailing things I enjoy.

You must be speaking of the cast, not polished tips. For the chrome tips, all you need is one of those microfiber covered "wands" made to clean "mag" wheels with. I love 'em. You just have to clean it up good when you're through washing the car. - BC
