Brake lines?
Anyone ever change all lines? Any complete sets? Thanks for any advice or ideas!

Re: Brake lines?
Never replaced all of the brake lines in one car but having worked as a mechanic many years ago, I always found brake lines to be a real pain.
As far as advice goes, don't use any compression fittings on brake lines, as that has been illegal for many, many years in NY, at the very least--but it may be a federal law.
Also, be sure to keep all connections clean to avoid leaks and always use flare nut wrenches for brake line fittings.
You have to love what road salt does to metals on cars.

Re: Brake lines?
McMaster Carr has 'Yor-lok' fittings - good for 2300psi in brass and 6700psi in steel. More than enough for a braking system. Basically a compression fitting except it can handle the higher pressure.
I usually get a 12" section of pre-flared line that has two of the fiittings I need, and a 25' reel of line, and some yor-lok fittings. I cut the 12" pieces in half, one goes on by the wheel and the other at the MC, and cut to fit the 25' reel.

Re: Brake lines?
Changed all the lines on my 96 SSEi over the winter. Not too enjoyable, but hey, if a girl can do it in 25 degree weather in the street...
seriously though, it is a simple job in theory. Two things that make it a pain in the butt: new fittings can be hard to come by. This is a potential problem, because if your car's fittings are like mine, you either won't want to re-use them or you won't have a choice. Which leads me to thing #2: The lines are bubble flare, so if you have to cut a line to slide your old fitting on, you have to either have a fancy bubble flare tool, or be able to make bubble flares with the double flare tool. I tried and failed at that, but I got lucky by having a friend with the fancy tool. I got some of the fittings I needed at Autozone, and the rest I had to sadly re-use. Perhaps someone else has more knowledge on how to get replacement fittings.
The other piece of advice I could offer is to spend the extra money on the nickel-copper lines. Yes, they are pricey, but if you plan on doing every single line on the car you will get tired of the steel ones real quick. The ni-cop ones bend very nicely and make a painful job much less so.
