anyone good with Custom box design

Post by loud95sse »

I want to eventually design a ported box where the port is the fold down trunk entry. I would also be putting in a horizontal port between the 6x9's in the rear deck, to get sound from the front and back of the sub. I'm going for SPL/soundquality

I need to find out the exact volume of the box and port style and length to do so. I may need some box tuneing software.

Anyone know where to get 6x9 enclosures for the bonnevilles or is that custom.
Naturally aspirated 95 bonneville sse. HV3 insert, 9" k+N cold air intake, Hi-flow muff, new metallic paint, 16" chrome rims, tinted tails.
I love Alpine. Alpine cd player, 15" alpine type R w/ alpine mrd-m1005 amp. more to come.
Comeing soon: hi-flow TB, PCM, maybe rockers.

Chances are that your not going to get SQ out of a ported box, especially one with a complex design like this one. Ported CAN sound great but it needs a LOT of trial and error, even with box tuning software, itll be a lot of work to get high sound quality.

What do you mean by gettign sound from the front and rear of the sub? Do you mean having the sub facing the passthrough and the port going up between the 6x9s? Or do you mean having a dual chamber box where the sub is inside and theres a front chamber port going through the passthrough and a rear chamber port going up between the 6x9s?
Theres a huge differance between the two. Something to keep in mind is that in a regular ported box, when you double the number of ports, you must double the length of the ports as well to get the same tuning frequency.
To design this system youll need the full parameters of the sub(s), the maximum size you can use for the sub box, and a GOOD box building program like BassBox pro or similar.

I love car Audio guys if you couldn't tell. I will be doing all the work myself. A lot of trial and error to look forward to.

The only port in the box itself will be throught the trunk entry. since I will be putting mdf across the back of the back seat. The sub will face the rear the port will come through the back seat. the air in front of the sub will have nowhere to go so I was thinking the vent or port between the 6x9's, so even more sound will come into the cab.

I am already hitting 140.1 db with the 15" in a sealed obcon godzilla now

I won't be able to get Ultimate sound quality with a ported box But I want it to sound somewhat good. Not a strict spl system where it sounds like crap. I was thinking of tuneing it around 38-40hz which is about the best frequency for SQ with a ported box.

I was surpised with the sound quality I got out of an Obcon chambered cannon box a couple years ago. sounded almost as smooth as a sealed enclosure. I wouldn't mind designing one like that for a 15". Obcon only makes those for 10" and 12".

I will need to work on getting the software you spoke of, and take some measurements.

Its good that you dont mind trial and error. Its the only way to really get something right. Having the sub configured that way would work. By having the port going into the cabin and then having the sub facing into the trunk aand another port firing up through the deck into the cabin you have now designed a 6th order bandpass box when you include the trunks volume and port. Not saying that It wont work well, just a note of interest.
140.1 db is pretty good though, are you going for louder? A good ported design can give you 3db more SPL especially at the tuning frequency. If you tune this right you should get interesting results. Try to calculate your trunk volume as best you can because it seems like it would be a good thing to factor in. try modelling your system as a 6th order bandpass when you get some software. Itll help you calculate the port going through the 6x9s.

Wal Mart has some 6×9" speaker boxes for $12.99 each. Just buy them, put them together, and presto. I'm first trying my own 6x9 box, but those are available. I've heard from someone that they're nice. Even if they're not, you can buy them just for the template and wood. Maybe adjust the wood by adding more or taking off some to adjust the angle. The rear deck of your Bonneville may need to be modified to hold the boxes well, but modifying the rear deck is quite a bit more fun, I've found, than it sounds.
