UPDATE:
As per Archon's advice, I got a pot and tested the wiring to the dashboard gauge. Everything checked out there, as the gauge responded to the pot shaft being manipulated (sounds kinds dirty, huh?). So, I attacked the problem from the other side. I tested the resistance from the sender (at the solder points) --> then through the wiring --> and then to the connector, and all worked well there, too.
So, before I reinstalled the pump, I connected the pump wiring to the gauge wiring, turned the key to the "On" position, and used the float arm to check if the gauge was moving in relation to the sender. Everything worked out there, too.
Tomorrow I'm going to try starting the beast. I'm giving it an overnight to exhaust the gas fumes from the trunk and passenger compartment.
Further results to follow...
