Thats a pretty sick lookin car there, that 350 looked pretty nice too, to bad that it shredded itself.. it reminds me of this one guy I knew that had an 86 monte that had a 350 with a mild can. The idiot ran it wot through a huge puddle of water. Sadlyand to no surprise, the car quit after that and got passed around to a bunch of half-***ers that could never build a car, let alone get one running.

Hopefully you can find a deal on an engine that you wannna swap in, gl with the search!

My son had an '88. He bought it for $500 with a dusted motor. Had to punch it out .040 over to clean up the cylinders in the 305. He put about $1200-1500 into the engine and it ran surprisingly well for the hated 305.

It was painted metallic green and we called it the Jalepeno (his sisters called it the "Monte Crappo", or Crappo for short, which was a misnomer because it was actually a very nice car). He wound up selling it after a couple years for $4200. I'll try to find some pics.

Everybody's got advice on how to spend your money, so let me add mine - I'd consider installing a new 5.3 in there just because I had a Camaro with a 327 once and really liked the performance of that engine.

I have a friend that recently picked up an '86 Cutlass to restore and beef up. Someday I want to get my own G-body, an '87 Grand National (GNX if I really had unlimited funds, as that's my dream car).

I would love a GN, but I couldnt justify the double price tag vs a Monte, or triple that of a cutlass

Well, my friend picked up his Cutlass for $2K. It's in really nice shape and has had a lot of recent work done. Just a few bits of rust here and there, but you get that with an Ohio car.

And yes, there is a GNX for sale near Columbus, OH, but they want $110K for it. Ouch!

I am OK with my Cutlass right now but really want a GN and a Grand Prix. I had an '82 Grand Prix before and I like it over any of the other ones except the Grand National.

Pulled the trigger on a 260HP/350TQ crate motor today. It is not a powerhouse, but its all new and will provide me with some good bones to build upon. Also ordered thinner head gaskets and a more aggressive cam to put in, this combo should net me about 325HP.

Can't wait to get this together (and get the transmission fixed )

That should make for a nice fun toy for sure! Is the engine set up for a roller cam or just flat tappet?

Its a flat tappet motor, I would have liked a roller setup but wasn't ready to spend that kind of money

I hear that, a roller retrofit for my engine is around $700 :(
