98 stalls on way home, then restarts after two mins.

Post by chriskirbyh2o »

98 se will run fine every morning. Then on a hot day it will stall on the way home. It has left me coasting on the highway, and stranded at a traffic light many times now. The cooler the weather, the less likely that this occurs. I just sit there after I turn off the key for a minute, then vroom, it starts right up and I drive my ass out of everyones way. I'm waiting for it to happen again so I can test the fuel pressure and then I'll tell you guys what it says. From all the posts, and mechanic advise it could be anything. But if you know what it is I would appreciate the help.

Thanks
Chris.

Sounds like either the ICM or crank sensor. Go to a JY and get a used ICM. They are a lot cheaper and are readily available.

This is a classic ICM connector issue.
Take the screw out pull the connector off,
put it on and off 2 or three times, tighten up on the
sockets with a tiny screwdriver.
Then apply dielectric grease.

Sounds more to me like a crank sensor. They typically like cold, and act up during hotter weather.

I keep reading threads that don't have a conclusion. I guess once its fixed you don't come back. Anyway, I'll keep updating. Still cool weather, 70's, and no stalling even on hour long drives. Still carrying around a rented fuel pressure tester, but I am going to return it cuz I have seen everyone's posts where they say they replaced the plump to avail. But I do want to buy a new fuel pump relay, cheap right? And I'll clean that plug. And I need to find a good JY, theres lots in San Diego.

Thank you for the replys. :)

Crank sensors act up when hot causing a no start condition.

So far the problem has not returned. The only repair made was to the fuel pump relay(replaced it). The weather has been hot and no stalls yet. I will post again if it every occurs. Thanks for your help!

When my 90 SSE did this it was the connector below the coils, (ICM)
It had bad contacts.

Just want to update the thread for future searches. My buddy swapped the relays in the passenger foot well. That's what I meant when I said replaced. He pulled em out one by one until the car stalled to find out which one went to the fuel pump. Once it stalled he swapped that one out with another of the same number. Since then I have never stalled again. So that's my story. I jiggled all the ICM wires and never caused a stall. I think the lesson is to always replace the cheaper items before tearing out your cranksensor. Peace
