Buying a GXP Past 100K? Good Deal?

Car has 95K on it and dealer is asking 9,000. Good deal? Any input on reliabilty past 100K?

Well I bought mine for $5700 a few weeks ago with 156k. It still seems to be in decent shape all things considered, but if you can't do complex work themselves on your own vehicle I wouldn't recommend buying the GXP in spite of my love for it.

I sold mine with 121k, reasonably minty fresh, and studded engine that had a top end rebuild. $5800. Local markets may vary, but $9k is highway robbery.

Reliability past 100k will vary and is subject to the court of public opinion. There are the common 2000+ model year problems, plus the Northstar likes to leak oil and or coolant. Heads may or may not be a problem at high mileage (> 200-230k miles). You will be fine if you do your own work on your car and are not afraid of tight working spaces.

Not a whole lot of GXP's for sale on cars.com or autotrader or cargurus.com most have higher mileage or are 12-15K which is too expensive.

Just because they are asking insane, crackpipe prices doesn't mean that's what they'll take. Heck, go offer the guy $5,000 bring $100 bills cash in hand, you never know what might happen when people see cash in front of their. I know from experience. I've experienced it in both buying and selling, its hard to turn down cash in your face now unless its an extreme lowball or you are attached to the vehicle.

Not a bad idea. I like the Bonne GXPs and the Grand Prix GXPs but they are both hard to find now, especially the Bonnes and at a good price.

I believe a Bonne GXP with 95k in good condiitions might be around 7,500(??)

Hence the reason I went with a Cadillac I guess you could say it was kind of right place, right time though too. I love the look of the Bonneville but I couldn't justify paying $3000-$4000 more for something with 50k-70k more miles.

Search the whole country.

There was a nice clean one with like 102k for sale on here a while back. I believe it was in for sale section, crimson in color. Fairly priced but way out on the east coast.

If it's a dealership, they really don't care what you bring or what you don't bring. As a matter of fact, many don't want cash for a couple reasons.

1) Now they have to have people handling cash. You know what happens when people handle cash, right?
2) What happens if the place gets broken into overnight before they can make the deposit? (Yes, this happened to another dealership we worked close to).
3) Now an employee has to make a large deposit.
4) You don't know whether or not the buyer just printed those bills off on his HP Laserjet... You're not a bank, you don't have the proper protocols/training for people handling the money to verify every bill!
4) When buying on credit, most finance companies give a little sliver of the pie back to the dealer for writing the loan with them.

So yea, Cash isn't what it was 50 years ago, even when buying a now 10 year old used car. A matter of fact, even as a private seller, if you came to me with cash, I'd request that you go to the bank, pay them, and get a certified check to protect both of us.

See that's the thing I would NEVER buy a car from a dealership. You know you're getting screwed. I mean I guess if it was the perfect one or brand new. I have only dealt with craigslist. If it ain't green, I don't want it. It's a lot easier to print off a fake check that is a worthless piece of paper in my mind.

Green I can verify its real before you leave.

But I have heard that on dealerships they would prefer to finance you as they will make even more money that way.

A "good deal" is highly subjective. If you like the item (car, boat, shoes, whatever) and the seller is willing to take what you're willing to pay, it's a good deal. It doesn't matter what anyone else's opinion is. I wouldn't give $1.27 for a Prius, but there are people out there paying over $20k for them - apparently they think that's a good deal.

After you've done your homework on a product and decided that's your huckleberry, go find one you like, buy it, and be happy.
