Tranny drops gears while in cruise

Post by beamer »

I've been noticing lately that when I set my cruise anywhere between 60 and 75 it will periodically down shift for a second than jump back into overdrive again. I dont believe the tranny is slipping because when it down shifts it goes from 2000 to roughly 2500. I've been holding off with the transgo shift kit because of this awesome weather we've been having in Minnesota. Would installing that solve my problem or is it an entire different problem?

I'll have to look into that. It's fun to work on these bonnevilles sometime but now its starting to get old. I suppose that'll happen though when they get 170 on them. Hopefully nothing else major starts going.

Could it be the 4th gear hub wearing out, or does that go all at once when it goes?

The other day I was driving and all of a sudden it started chugging real bad couldn't get past 30mph. Almost like it was missing or the fuel pump was out. After many hours under the hood we found that the car would run perfect until the engine got completely warn. After testing fuel pressure, injectors and running a scan on the engine, everything was coming up fine. After reading a few data logs we concluded that the alternator is smoked. Now hopefully this will solve the problem to why it is doing what I explained in the original post. I'm gunna to Swap out the alternator tomorrow. I'll keep you updated

If it was the alternator, wouldn't you notice drop in battery voltage?

Well, it does drop voltage. Mainly when the heater is on high or when my subs hit. I took ot into the shop to see why it was losing power and I can't remember the exact part but some solenoid was burning up, getting to about 200 degrees when normal its below 100. Needless to say it hasn't done it since I got it replaced.
