Does it matter which spark plugs I get?

Talk about modifications, or anything else associated with performance enhancements. Have a new idea for performance/reliability? Post it here. No idea is stupid! (please use Detailing and Appearance for cosmetic ideas)

Does it matter which spark plugs I get?

Post by xyeLz »

I'm on the INTENSE website and I see a few different types here (only on their website, I haven't checked others).

First I see the Autolite Copper Core Spark Plugs. However, they offer various renditions (the one's I have seen advertised for our cars are 104 and 103). The website is actually pretty fantastic at explaining the differences between 103 and 104. I have an Aeroforce on the way to determine my actual boost amounts, but I expect around stock since the only upgrade I've done is an intake (pulley down the road once I get other mods done).

My question is relating to the second item I see on their website which is the Autolite "Racing and High Performance" Spark Plugs. Again, their website does a great job of explaining that using these over the previous 103's provide "additional horsepower". I guess I'm just wondering how these spark plugs will provide higher performance than the other spark plugs and if there's anything in regards to my engine that I need to be paying attention to before modifying my spark plugs. Could I cause permanent damage by switching to these?

All a spark plug does is create a spark. There is no horsepower advantage with anything other than the Copper Cores. I run Autolite Copper Core 606's in all my stock vehicles, and 104's in my hot rod.

So I could get the high performance 103s and not need to worry about a thing?

(btw, it was Intense's website that said it added more horsepower)

HAHAHA horsepower by way of spark?! That is too funny. Man, you'll be fine with plain old copper plugs or since your's is a 2001, platinum plugs would do just fine. Stick with AC Delco though, I can't count the number of times I've seen GM products have some other brand in them and they always seem to run a little off. Switch them out for AC Delco and they run perfect again.

So you say AC Delco over the Autolite that INTENSE offers too?

That is a total joke that they say one plug over the other will give you more horsepower

I have ran NGK TR 55 V Power copper plugs for over 125,000 miles now, changed them twice now and have had no issues. No way in hell would I spend a ton of money on plugs when a $2 plug does just fine. Also, stay away from platinum plugs in supercharged applications with waste spark ignition like ours.

I think what they mean is you will get less knock with colder plugs which equals more ponies. Nonetheless, get stock heat range on your car since it has no mods.

If and when you pulley down, then you can drop a heat range.

The heat range and that the plug fits properly in the head is all that's different in spark plugs. Too cold, and you're going to get running issues, poor mileage, etc. Too hot of a plug, and you could melt a piston. Mild Mods: AL 605, more mods: AL104.

No man, 103s are too cold for your car... And if you happen to put em in your car you will lose horsepower... I tried it once in my GTP when it was bone stock... nope really bad idea... Untill i got cams, heads, headers, tune, IC, 3.0" pulley i got the 103s

No, you should not. This discussion is strictly aimed at the OP's modified, supercharged engine.
