So I really just wanted to bump this to page 3 so I could put more pictures on it so they were a little more organized.

Pics:

New trunk lid installed complete w/ spoiler!

New front passenger side fender installed, and also headlamps installed so it's legal to drive as-is lol

Silverstar reverse and license plate lights.

The license plate lights weren't as blue as I was hoping so I might end up using LED's on them.

New Trunk lighting!!!
Image

Notice that really small thing in there used as stock lighting? lol

Image

These are the same strips I will be using in the interior and on the rocker panels btw.

just for kicks and giggles since it's kinda coming apart a bit again.

too late, it was already installed when you posted this lol. If it comes back off I'll probably paint it but otherwise it doesn't look too bad as-is.

I fully accomplished my to-do list for today so hopefully tomorrow it'll make it's way out of the garage and onto the street.

Well it's probably about time to update this.

I finally got the intake installed and on Friday we finally got the car running.
Image
Image

It started right up with good oil pressure (75 psi) and everything. After fixing a few fuel and transmission leaks we got to take it out for a drive. Everything went great, the transmission was shifting perfectly and the engine ran great except under boost. Whenever I gave it more than 3-5 psi of boost it would start misfiring on cylinder 5 according to my aeroforce. It was basically worthless to give it any boost since it ran so bad.

The car had aftermarket yellow tab coils on it so I switched coils with the coils from my 94 and it seemed like it was better, then I ended up getting proper blue tabs from the junkyard which didn't make much difference.

I ended up driving it back and forth from work and put about 200 miles on it over the weekend. I never really got much into the boost as much as I could help it due to the misfire and I thought I'd let the transmission wear in a little bit more.
Coming home Sunday night though I ran into some guy with a DSM and thought I'd give it some more power. I probably gave it too much power for the way it was running and the misfire got much worse; now it was misfiring under all conditions. Luckily I was only 2 miles from home so I just limped it back home hoping it was just a broken spark plug or something.

This is just after I got home with it:
Image

it wasn't just a spark plug...

Image
Image

The damage includes:
1 broken pushrod
2? bent valves
1 broken spring retainer
1 bad rocker

The cylinders and pistons all seem to be okay though.

I'm hoping the rockers weren't the cause of the damage, but either way they're not making it back in because one of their bearings feels like it has some metal or something in it. Maybe eventually they'll go back in but not for now. I'm extremely upset about all of this since I won't have the higher ratio rockers anymore. If it wasn't anything special before it definitely isn't now. Needless to say I'm not happy about this at all.

However, I don't have time to sit and complain about it because the meet is this weekend and this car is going.
I just pulled 2 more heads off a car in the junkyard and I'm picking up 2 new headgaskets and bolts for it tomorrow. I would've had it going again tonight but none of the parts stores had any gaskets in stock. Luckily I can reuse the LIM gasket and even the supercharger gasket!

as it sits:
Image

This will be running tomorrow night and hopefully going in for an alignment the next morning. White curse be d@**ed this car is going to detroit friday!

I would try to find some high wattage LED's unless you're getting plug and play led's that fit in the bulb socket. Most normal LED's won't be much brighter than stock lights, but they'll look cooler. Definitely post some pictures once you do it! I'm interested to see how well they'd do.

Re: Project: White Demon, ooops

Post by bs009 »

Just got done putting it back together. I'm sure I'll miss the rockers but for now she's running strong and actually handles the boost instead of misfiring. I'm sure that's due to me swapping the plugs though.

The only problem now though is that the exhaust is hitting the sway bar under heavy acceleration and it's being registered as knock. I'm going to try and flip the dogbone bushings so the engine won't move as much. Hopefully that takes car of that.

Tomorrow I'll see about getting it aligned, cleaned up, and fully put back together for friday.

turns out that the heads I picked up from the junkyard have leaking valve stem seals  . I'll just have to deal with it for now.

In other news I just clay bared the car, this being my first time using one. I was only going to do a small section but holy crap that thing was so awesome I ended up doing the whole car . It seriously made 2+ years of caked on dirt come off with no hassle at all; I'm impressed.

I also got my remote for the car programmed and unlike my other car it actually functions properly from a practical distance

I wonder what happened with the valvetrain.

My guess on valvetrain is one of the retainers failed because the rocker didn't seat properly and turned and hit the retainer, and the keeper shot out into the adjacent rocker and made it stiff enough to break the pushrod. Or the cylinder pulled enough vacuum with the one vlave stuck that it opened the adjacent valve far enough that the pushrod started to fall out until the valve snapped shut on it.

'Cause we all know when a 3800 goes down it's nothing short of spectacular!

Thanks a lot. To be fair I had quite a bit of motivation. This car was getting done before Friday come whatever may. There was no way I was going to be reduced to riding along or having to take my poor little 94 along.

I'm still hopeful that I'll be able to throw those rockers back in. When that happens I'll end up replacing those valve stem seals since it's burning too much oil.

Oh and it also doesn't do too bad at the track:
Image
That's me in the right lane. The track was pretty slick and it was only my second run ever at the strip. My first run was a 15.2 @ 96 with a 2.7 60'. Second run was the 14.35 @ 97 w/ a 2.4 60'. I'm sure if I had a better 60' I might've been able to break into the 13's. It definitely will once those rockers are back in there.

Future plans for this car will be only maintenance(tires/rims/alignment/suspension etc) for the remainder of this year since I've gone pretty well over budget.
Looking ahead into the future though I'd like to run e85 in it with the rockers and maybe even a full size intercooler. That would definitely be enough to make me happy with it. I'll probably start to focus more on my 82 Grand Prix after that since I've got some neat ideas for it. This car will be my daily driver pretty much from now on since it's spoiled me so much after driving the 94 for so long.

Thanks guys. There's a lot that I haven't updated since this and it barely looks like the same car right now. I'll get around to updating this once I start digging into it again.

I'm hoping to replace the rockers with 1.9's and do a bit of suspension work before the meet this year. I've also got a pretty awesome junkyard find that'll make its way onto here. Other than that though it's gonna be a whole lot of much needed cosmetic changes/updates for this car. I'm pretty happy with where its performance is at right now.
