I'd rather push a chevy and drive a ford

Post your pics of your non-Bonneville, and If you have video footage, we want to see it. Videos must be hosted on external web space and hotlinked to PontiacBonnevilleClub.com. Also discuss mechanical problems regarding your non-bonneville (this is not another lounge, but posts don't count, random car vids not of your cars should be in the lounge)

I'd rather push a chevy and drive a ford

Post by Hans »

Well, normally. I read a lot of horror stories about piston slap on the chevys along with AFM issues causing all sorts of expensive problems. Did some research on the fords, looks like the 3valve/cylinder have a fair share of issues. Ended up with a 4.6 2valve. Got a heck of a deal on it at a state government surplus auction yesterday. It was a government fleet/lease, until it hit 100k, then offered for sale. 110k on the clock. It had steel 17s, I found some 20s from a 2010 today and slapped em on. It still needs a windshield, plugs, rotors and alignment but otherwise an awesome deal even being a "base model".

After driving it home after a 2 hour detail session, as you can see it barely fits in the garage.

Pretty clean for 110k:

Steel rims, crappy looking bumper and grill, may replace those if I find a chrome set for a good price:

Still pretty clean after I washed the 6 years worth of dirt and grime off:

Not really used "as a truck" looking at the bed

And after I put some 20s on it today, huge improvement:

That is a huge improvement! Not bad, Ford does know how to make good trucks.

There have been issues with newer GM trucks, if I was going to get one, I'd get a Pre-06, but the new ones aren't awful.

Either way, these surplus auctions seem to have some good buys. Saw a few 08 impalas with 100k go for $4k or so. Paid a little less than twice that for this truck, but then again its a truck with 4 wheel drive, so they are not as good as a deal, but still thousands less than blue book.

We had a local DNR auction I went to to try and buy a truck, all 3 of the trucks I was considering went for *dang* near market price for a clean one, and they were far from clean...

Looks smart. You never see base model F-150s over here. If you do see one it's usually at least an XLT. There's a pimped F-150 about that age that turns up in my street regularly.

That's a good deal, Hans. Did this replace one of the other cars? I forget if you still had a Bonne or not...

I have found with my F-150 over the past few years, they are a well built truck. My '01 XLT has 150,000 miles on it and runs perfect. No ticks, no oil loss, no leaks, and plenty of torque from the ol' 5.4. It's been flawless and this thing gets abused on a regular basis. Hard to beat the F-150, number one for a reason.
