Aftermarket Additives
Hey Pontiac Bonneville Club! Was wondering if anyone uses any oil, fuel, or any other aftermarket additives with claims of improvements such as Lucas or Gumout? I was thinking of doing the Lucas Deep Clean with my next fill-up, then wondered if it was really necessary every month as the bottle makes you think. THEN I start thinking about oil additives that clean up the block, etc. Any positive or negative thoughts welcome!

Re: Aftermarket Additives
It's all crap. Modern fuel has enough additives as it is, as does modern oil. Run a good quality fuel from a station that you know gets a lot of traffic (Helps avoid crap in their tanks) and run a good quality oil. It also helps to keep your throttle body clean of carbon, and change your air, fuel and oil filters regularly.
Bye Bye:

I ran some Techron a couple of times. Honestly, maybe it increased my MPG by like 1? Recently I just don't care. If ain't broke, don't fix it. Penny gets new synthetic oil every 5k miles and a healthy idle to 6200RPM beat down on the daily. That's her tune up. Nothing like burning off ALL the carbon deposits.

I run Amsoil 10w30 OE every 5000 miles in my 98SE. I only use top tier 87 octane fuel ( http://www.toptiergas.com/retailers.html), and put in Amsoil PI in the gas tank every 10,000 miles. I have come to believe the 10% ethonal in most gasoline does not agree with most 2009 and older vehicles. I get 29.8 combined fuel economy via torque app, with AC in 100 degree traffic.
If your putting a quality oil in the engine, adding Lucas or some other additive will negate whatever additives are in the quality oil, and vice versa, so the Lucas will be for naught as well.

My personal experience has been the same on E10, but I also think any ethanol is bad for any gasoline powered engine. As far as oil additives, only when the engine is on it's last legs and you don't want to spend the money on a rebuild, new engine or car. I ran an '83 GP 3.8L 100,000 miles and 6 years with a knocking connecting rod using STP or no-name "motor honey". Re: Aftermarket Additives
I've been using marvel mystery oil in all my engines for a couple years now. If nothing else it keeps the fuel pump lubed. I do think it keeps the top end of the motor clean and lubed too. I do agree about cleaning the TB too mine was caked to the point of sticking closed. Also use tranny fluid in place of it sometimes, told my Dad about it, he said they did that in the 1950's. Works as a good cleaner in the motor oil as well. Usely put 25 cents worth of diesel in oil just before the first oil change of any car i buy, only run it for a few miles that really brings that grime out.

That's sorta what I come to think, especially the "ain't broke, don't fix" mentality. I usually use Shell or BP 87grade so it didn't make sense to waste money. That's why I ask you gents! Oldman, that's quite a feat to run that long with a knock!

Just keep adding a can of it until it stops knocking. That's all, well you do have to stay on top of it and change the oil before it starts knocking again too - lol. - NCPilotScott wrote:That's sorta what I come to think, especially the "ain't broke, don't fix" mentality.
