Plastidip

Post by KelvinVV »

Anyone here use Plastidip a lot? I've heard a lot of good reviews elsewhere, and wanted to know what you guys thought of it. I recently ordered a couple cans of black for some stuff I want to try with my car. The nice thing about it is, if I dont like it, I can always just peel it off. I plan on using it to paint my rims. I'm not going to paint the entire rim, just the parts that aren't as shiny chrome-y. I think it will give it an aftermarket look but still keeping the OEM theme.

Anyone know how to use photoshop or other photo editing software? Could someone make a mock up of what it might look like when finished? I have the 5 bent spoke rims. Ill update with before/after pictures when I get done with it. Should look pretty cool! :)

I used it on my '02 SE and am very happy with it. Blacked out the badges, chrome grill, chrome door strips, and wheels.

For easy peel off I would go one can per wheel.

I did all the badges on the unIngriguing and its pretty nifty. Id be more tempted to do the wheels on the bonneville if I thought i could ever get the stuff out of all the nooks and crannies. Plus I have a healthy coat of OptiCoat on them so I doubt it would work so well.

I think you should go with a gloss black paint since it will be on chrome wheels.. If your unsure about it do Plastidip then peel it off and do it with paint if you like it.. But you've seen my wheels so you know you wanna do it haha

The concept of Plastidip is cool and I like that but I've never been a fan of flat black or any color that's flat.. I like my sh!t shiny lol

That's the thing, I would love it to be shines, but I would hate to ruin them if I made a mistake. I think I'm going to just tape it really well and try what you did. What sort of paint did you use again? Vht nightshade stuff?

Most defintely not vht nightshade. like I said in my long post in my picture thread I mixed clear coat (the same clear I used when painting cars) with a few grams of black to make a tinted clear coat..then did however many coats was needed to achieve the darkness I wanted. If you don't have a spray gun and paint equipment & the paint, reducer etc.. itself though then you will need to just use rattle cans which is fine...I had all this stuff since it was my line of work..really your best option then is to go with a gloss black and just do light coats until you get the darkness you want..you won't need a clear coat then..it should still be glossy. honestly if you tape everything off you can't screw it up so don't worry too much about that.

Also, sand down/scuff up the area of the spokes a little that you want to paint with 600 grit sandpaper..not the smooth chrome part obviously..just the rough inside part..it won't hurt it since it is rough anyways, it is just to prep the surface so that paint will stick. If you don't it will have a tendency to eventually start peeling in the future..ask me how I know lol

Thanks for the advice! While we do own an actual spray gun, I'm not very skilled in it, since I've only ever used it about 3 times. I think I'm just going to rattle can it. This probably wont be done for quite some time, I've got an ever increasing list of things I want to do with my car, it just never seems to end. :)
